Summary Sigismund August and Orthodox Church in Poland The Orthodox Church during the reign of the Sigismund August had a significant influence on the religiousness and customs of the whole Com monwealth. At the beginning of the 16th century the organisational structure of the Orthodox Church in Poland reached its final form. In the 16th century, the metropolitan possessed an official title of the archbishop metropolitan of Kiev, Halich and of all Rus. He did not usually reside in Kiev but in the northern part of his diocese, in Novahradak or in Vilnius. The Kiev Metropolia governed six dioceses, seven of which lay within the boundaries of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (Kiev, Polatsk-Vitebsk, Smolensk-Seversk, Chernihiv-Bransk, TurovPinsk, Lutsk-Ostroh and Volodymyr-Brest) and three in Ruthenian territories of the Polish Crown (Khelm-Belsk, Przemysl-Samborsk, and Halych). Two or three word names of the bishoprics are a result of the preservation of historical names of the dioceses, from the indication of an ordinary’s place of residence or tran sfer of jurisdiction together with the title to a new place. The area of the metro polia of Kiev was within the borders of the state. After the annexation of the districts of Sievier-Chernihov and of Smolensk by Moscow at the beginning of the 16th century, the metropolia of Kiev lost the bishoprics of Kiev and Chernihov. In 1539, the bishopric of the Greek Church in Halich was renamed to the bishopric of Lviv. By the end of 16th century, there had been 8 Orthodox dioceses within the borders of the Polish Commonwealth. In the
territories of the Crown, they were divided into „namiestnictwa”, and in the Grand Duchy into protopopes districts, protopopes and „namestnik’s” districts shaped up under the influence of the state administrative divisions, structure of property and the development of the network of parishes. A parish was a basic unit of the Orthodox administration. The density of parish distribution resulted from the level of the economic growth of the region, the number of the faithful. It was influenced by the division of property and by the state of the religious aware ness of the Rhutenians. The greatest number of parishes was found in the capi tals of dioceses and a protopope’s districts (Pinsk - 13, Vilnyus - 12, Volody myr - 11, Lviv, Brest, Kamianets and Ovruch - 8 each, Halich and Polotsk 7 each, Lutsk, Kolomyia, Kovel, Hrodno - 6 each, Kholm, Belsk, Kletsk 5 each). However, the areas with one or two parishes prevailed. The develop ment of a parish network was hindered due to the progress of the Reformation and Catholicism, and, which was connected with it, due to the process of the re nunciation of the Orthodox faith by Rhutenian nobility. - 100 ֊
The power of the Commonwealth was based upon the recognition by the Ruthenian population of Orthodox faith the Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as their own state. Recent studies show that loyalty of Orthodox Chri stians to the Catholic hospodar was the result of the growing ties with the state of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, commitment of the Ruthenian population to the rule of Yagiellonian dynasty. Orthodox hierarchy referred with a distance to a vision of Moscow concerning reconstruction of a state from all the lands once belonging to the Principality of Kiev. Subordinating Ruthenian lands of Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Crown to Moscow meant the elimination of selfecclesiastical province, metropolia of Kiev. Among the Orthodox hierarchy there prevailed a conviction that the dukes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had been more legitimate to the religious traditions of Kievan Rus rather than the rulers from Moscow. Some other facts also demonstrate the loyalty of the Orthodox ehtes. None of the three Orthodox senators from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (castellan of Vilnius Hrehory Khodkievich, castellan of Novogrod Hrehoiy Wollovich and Brest-Lithuanian governor George Tyshkievich) were in favor of the candidacy of Ivan IV at sejmik in Rudniki in September 1572. During the reign of the last Yagiellon, the Orthodox Church was guar anteed autonomy and the ability of governing according to their own regula tions. Its position and legal status were affected by the two applicable laws: the right of “nomination” (podawania) and “ktitors”. Both laws gave Polish
kings right to nominate the clergy to the positions in church’s administration and to care for moral and material wellbeing of the clergy. In accordance with the law of “ktitors”, highest ktitors (patrons) in the Orthodox Church were the kings. In the
territories of the Crown, they were divided into „namiestnictwa”, and in the Grand Duchy into protopopes' districts, protopopes' and „namestnik’s” districts shaped up under the influence of the state administrative divisions, structure of property and the development of the network of parishes.
The monarchs benefited from both of these rights by selecting candidates for election at the bishop’s cathedrals, but rarely cared to choose the appropriate people. A similar policy had been conducted by lay magnates towards Orthodox clergy in properties, which included a monastery and churches. In the sixteenth century, there took place significant changes among the Orthodox communities. Development of the Protestant Reformation also embraced adherents of Eastern Christianity.
