SUMMARY Goran Barас AN AMATEUR FILM IN BANJALUKA Until recently, non-professional, auteur, alternative or amateur cinematography in Banjaluka was a complete unknown. On the one hand, the official history of the seventh art in the area oftoday’s largest city in the Republic ofSrpska has been remarkably well researched and - apartfrom crumbs - the city on the banks of the Vrbas River has nothing else to boast about. On the other hand, almost nothing is known about the origin, development, ups and downs of non-professional motion pictures, and Banjaluka can be proud of its cinema amateurs and their decades-long production on a narrow 8mm and 16mm film stock. Namely, through the history ofamateur cinematography in „ the Beauty ofKrajina ” since 1937 until today, about twenty well-known and several (for now, still unknown) enthusiasts have paraded, leaving a joint legacy of as many as 204 motion picture, documentary and experimentalfilms forfuture generations! The authors ofthefirst amateurfilm in Banjaluka were Spiridon Spiro Bocaric (1876-1941) and Karlo Deri. During the spring and summer of1937, this director-cameraman tandem traveled through the then Vrbas Banovina, making aboutforty minutes of 16mm film stock, from which they edited the documentary-ethnographic film „ Gradovi i predjeli Vrbaske banovine ” (Cities and Landscapes of the Vrbas Banovina) just before World War II. Only a year later, in the summer of1938, two more citizens ofBanjaluka - Aleksandar Bojko (1896—1969) and Augustin Dekaris (1902-1987) - sailed into the waters ofamateur cinema. Both were shooting on
8mm film stock, firstfamilyfilms, and then creations with an extremely strong travelogue, ethnographic and tourist note. In the middle of1938, Dekaris entered the history ofBanjaluka 's motion pictures with the golden letters, by capturing the first celluloid shots of his city in color. It should be noted in particular the fact that the mentioned Banjaluka quartet was the only representative of amateurfilm production in Bosnia and Herzegovina before World War III It is unlikely that in large cities - such as Sarajevo, Tuzla or Mostar ֊ during the thirties of the XX century there were no film non-professionals. However, concrete evidence of their work in thefield ofmotion pictures (unlike Banjaluka cinema amateurs) has not been preserved. The real curiosity is that during World War II, Bojko made an abundance offilm material, which became a real celluloid monument about the life ofBanjaluka and its inhabitants during thefour-year German-Ustasha occupûtion. The two-partfilms „Bosna koja je prošla ” (Bosnia that Passed), „Banjaluka u ratu ” (Banja Luka in the War) and „ Motivi sa Vrbasa ” (Motivesfrom the Vrbas River), then „Bosanskipejzaž ” (The Bosnian Landscape) and all sorts ofjournals by this author are incredible visual testimonies of long-gone times. At the beginning of 1961, a new era in Banjaluka's amateurfilm began. In January 1961, Ljubinko Bato Smoljanovic (1928-2016) bought the firstfilm camera, which was available on the market in Banjaluka (PentAKa AK8), and thus began his 36-year-longfriendship with 8mm celluloid tape. In the same year, Slavko Podgorelec
(1951-2015) became the first registered cinema amateur in Banjaluka, and the first (albeit, pioneering) cinema club in the city on the banks of the Vrbas River was formed (Film Section of the Elementary School „ Esad Midzic ”), while ismet Ibrisagic (1914-1984) began the realization ofthe ambitious traveloguetouristfilm „Jugoslavija ” (Yugoslavia). In 1963, the Photo-Cinema Club „Elan ” (Élan) was founded in the
SUMMARY Teacher School, and a year later the Photo-Cinema Club „ Gimnazijalac ” (High School Student) in the High School. The mentioned youth cinema clubs were real nurseries ofcameramen, screenwriters, directors and actors, who dominated the amateurfilm scene in „the Beauty ofKrajina”in the seventies of the last century. Amateur cinema lovers Ljubinko Bato Smoljanovic, Miodrag Sobot (1938-2014), Ivica Kurtovic (1929֊?) and Señad Čauševič (born in 1953) left valuable film records about their city after the catastrophic earthquake, which destroyed Banjaluka on October 27, 1969. The zenith ofnon-professionalfilmmaking in the largest Krajina city lastedfor a whole decade -from 1972 to 1982. During that time, anthological works by Banjaluka authors ofmotion pictures were created: „Lazar sa Zmijanja” (Lazar from Zmijanje; 1972/1975), „Priča о ružama i ognju” (The Story ofRoses and Fire; 1975), „ Tihe vode ” (Silent Waters; 1976) and „Kuda žuriš, čoveče? ” (What’s the Hurry, Man?; 1977) by Smoljanovic, „Anatema ” (Anathema; 1973) by Podgorelec, „ Tiha rijeka ” (Silent River; 1973), „ Trilogija Edgara Poa ” (Trilogy ofEdgar Poe; 1979), „Ligeja 2” (Ligeia 2; 1981) and „Proljetna sonata” (Spring Sonata; 1982) by Velimir Bojko (born in 1948), then „Izvor” (Source; 1974), „ Utorak” (Tuesday; 1975) and „Metropolis” (Metropolis; 1982) by Slobodan Stanisic (born in 1953), „Ritám” (Rhythm; 1981) by Edin Tahirovič (1961-2015) and Adem Kobaslic (born in 1961), then „ Tragovi” (Traces; 1977) by the Podgorelec-Bojko tandem and „ Čl. 92 st. 2 Krivičnog zakona BiH” (Article 93 paragraph 2 of
the BiH Criminal Code; 1978) by Kamenko Muratagic (born in 1952). The mentioned achievements were awarded with a whole series ofhonours at non-professionalfilm festivals in the socialist Yugoslavia, which made Banjaluka one of thefew cities with an authentic amateurfilm school. Cinema/Film Club „Kozara 816” was the only senior association of lovers of the seventh art in Banjaluka. It existedfrom 1978 to 1986, and during that timefifteen authors endowed the history ofmotion pictures in „the Beauty ofKrajina ” with a dozen achievements, which were side by side with the production ofsimilar clubs in Belgrade, Zagreb and Split, the most significant and influential ones in theformer Yugoslavia. Truefilmmakers gathered around „Kozara 816”, who dreamed ofmoving their production from amateur into semi-professional one. However, due to the stepmotherly attitude of the political structures in Banjaluka and Sarajevo towards this type offilmmaking, their dreams not only remained unfulfilled, but also (prematurely) influenced the complete shutdown ofthe club. The sudden expansion ofvideo equipment in the world and the appearance ofthefirst amateur camcorders on the Yugoslav market in 1984, as well as worsening of the economic situation in post-Tito's state, influenced the gradual cessation ofnon-professionalfilmmaking in the city on the banks of the Vrbas River. As a tornado, video began to takefilm technique and technology off the market, and the demandforfilm tape became weaker and weaker, becoming thus more and more expensive and inaccessible. Cinema amateurs in Banjaluka
increasingly leaned towards video technology (although, at that time, the picture quality was much worse than with film), and that inevitably led to the complete disappearance of the classic amateur cinema movement in this city. The last celluloid production, the montage-archive film „In memoriam: Vlado Miloševič ” (In memoriam: Vlado Milosevic), was signed in 1990 by Velimir Bojko. With it, this author (after 53 years) lowered the curtain on the stage oforganizedfilm amateurism in Banjaluka. |
