Zusammenfassung: | "Humanism and Religion in Early Modern Spain brings together twenty-five essays by renowned historian Terence O'Reilly. The essays examine the interplay of religion and humanism in a series of writings composed in sixteenth-century Spain. It begins by presenting essential background: the coming together during the reign of the Emperor Charles V of Erasmian humanism and various movements of religious reform, some of them heterodox. It then moves on to the reign of Philip II, focusing on the mystical poetry and prose of St John of the Cross. It explores the influence on his writings of his humanist learning - classical, biblical and patristic. The third part of the book concerns a verse-epistle by John's contemporary, Francisco de Aldana. One chapter presents the text with a parallel version in English, whilst two others trace its debt to Florentine Neoplatonism, particularly the thought of Marsilio Ficino. The final part is devoted to the humanism of the poet and Scripture scholar Luis de León, and specifically to the confluence in his work of biblical and classical motifs. This book is essential reading for scholars and students of early modern Spanish history, as well those interested in literary studies and the history of religion"-- |

This book is essential reading for scholars and students of early modern Spanish history, as well those interested in literary studies and the history of religion"-- Aldana, Francisco de 1537-1578 (DE-588)118846507 gnd rswk-swf Juan de la Cruz, Heiliger 1542-1591 (DE-588)118640038 gnd rswk-swf León, Luis de 1527-1591 (DE-588)118727532 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1500-1600 gnd rswk-swf Humanismus (DE-588)4026140-2 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf Spanien (DE-588)4055964-6 gnd rswk-swf Spain / Church history / 16th century John of the Cross / Saint / 1542-1591 Aldana, Francisco de / 1537-1578 León, Luis de / 1527-1591 Erasmus, Desiderius / -1536 Humanism / Spain / History / 16th century Humanism Spain 1500-1599 Church history History Spanien (DE-588)4055964-6 g Humanismus (DE-588)4026140-2 s Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Geschichte 1500-1600 z DE-604 Juan de la Cruz, Heiliger 1542-1591 (DE-588)118640038 p Aldana, Francisco de 1537-1578 (DE-588)118846507 p León, Luis de 1527-1591 (DE-588)118727532 p Boyd, Stephen 1957- (DE-588)1089845804 edt Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, ebk. 978-1-00-317626-8 Variorum collected studies series CS1102 (DE-604)BV023545112 1102 Digitalisierung BSB München - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033226508&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
