The Oxford Handbook of Moral Responsibility is a collection of 33 articles by leading international scholars on the topic of moral responsibility and its main forms, praiseworthiness and blameworthiness. The articles in this volume focus on scholarship on these topics since 1960. During that time, the nature of moral responsibility —whether it is fundamentally a matter of deserved blame and praise, or instead grounded anticipated good consequences such as moral education and formation, or if there are various kinds of moral responsibility that reflect such differences—has been debated extensively. Scholars have also examined moral responsibility for both actions and omissions, whether responsibility comes in degrees, and if groups such as corporations can be responsible. This Oxford Handbook reflects this philosophical approach to moral responsibility. Contributors also examine important topics such as: the connection between personal relationships and moral responsibility, including notions such as moral resentment and indignation; gratitude and love; and forgiveness and reconcihation. They re-examine traditional debates about the threats to moral responsibility from causal determinism, and from the absence of the ability to do otherwise that may result, and explore the relevance of physics, neuroscience, and psychology to moral responsibility. Lastly, they examine recent psychological research on topics such as addiction and implicit bias, and how they illuminate the ways and degrees to which we might or might not be morally responsible. |
