SUMMARY This publication, continuing an edition of the correspondence between Adolf Chybiński and Ludwik Bronarski from the period between the two world wars, covers the years 1934—1939. During that time, after the Kwartalnik Muzyczny [Music quarterly] ceased publica tion, Chybiński took up the post of editor-in-chief of a new musicology periodical aimed ex clusively at experts’: the annual Pokki Rocznik Muzykologiczny [Polish Musicological Journal]. He was de facto the sole editor (even the address of the editorial office given in the imprint, 20 Kalecza street, was the professor’s private address in Lviv). The new periodical differed from its predecessor in that it contained ‘exclusively scholarly works from the field of musicology, [...] exclusively scholarly, so being the result of independent scholarly research, and not pop ularising works in musicology, reporting more or less independently on phenomena that are also the subject of scholarly interests’.1 Once again, one of the main authors and trusted collaborators on the periodical was the Chopin expert Ludwik Bronarski. As before, Chybiński treated him in a special way and still declared T shall print everything that you care to send to the Polski Rocznik Muzykologiczny (Chybiński, Lviv, 12 June 1934) and that ‘for the great master of Polish Chopin studies, I will leave as much free space as he bids, in both the articles and the reviews’ (Chybiński, Lviv, 28 April 1935). Although just two volumes of that Polish yearbook were published over the six years covered by the letters collected here, with a delayed third
issue in print, publishing matters were ever present in the letters from Lviv, in which one of the main strands was continuously updated news regarding progress on editorial and authorial work. As in previous years, we can follow Chybinski’s daily toil to realise his publishing plans - not always crowned with success. Volume I of the Rocznik was published in May 1935, with volume II following in the autumn of 1936. Work on the third volume proceeded accordingly, and there was nothing to suggest the delay of several years that ultimately arose. A set of unforeseen circumstances meant that the composed text, finally ready for print in the late summer of 1939, was unfortu nately destroyed when the Soviets entered Lviv in September that year. Luckily, the working materials survived, and after the war, Chybiński, as editor-in-chief of the third incarnation of Adolf Chybiński, ‘Przedmowa [Preface], Pokki Rocznik Muzykologiczny, I (1935), pages unnumbered. 2II
Summary the Kwartalnik Muzyczny, used them for its first issue (no. 21 in the numbering resumed from 1933), including Bronarski’s article on ‘two unknown works by Chopin. As for Bronarski, his slightly reduced presence on the pages of the Lviv periodical com pared to previous years resulted directly from his involvement in two projects of importance to his academic career: the monograph Harmonika Chopina [Chopin’s harmony] and a crit ical edition of the composer’s complete works, of which he was to be one of the editors. The monograph, which still belongs to the canon of Chopinological publications, was published in October 1935 and made an excellent impression, not just on the staff and students of the musicology department of Lviv University, but also among the broad ranks of musicologists and critics. Over subsequent months, that publication was reviewed in several important, influential musical and literary periodicals. A lengthy and insightful review was prepared for the Pokki Rocznik Muzykologiczny by Józef Μ. Chomiński, a graduate of the Lviv musicology department, about whom the professor wrote: ‘my representative harmonist, possibly even the most gifted of my musicologists’ (Chybiński, Lviv, 16 January 1936). One important event in Bronarski’s academic career was the inauguration of the work of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw, in 1934. The Institute’s Board asked him to help prepare a new edition of Chopin’s works. The editorial committee that was taking shape at that time also included the Lviv-based Chopin scholar Bronisława Wójcik-Keuprulian, the pi
anist JózefTurczyński and - an honorary editor in a sense, although also actively participating during the early stages - Ignacy Jan Paderewski. His participation in the work on that edition placed Bronarski among the leading Chopin authorities at that time and marked out a new path of scholarly work ‘in aid of’ Fryderyk over the decades to come. Crucial changes also occurred at this time in Bronarski’s private life: he left Geneva and moved with his parents to Fribourg. That represented a sentimental return, as it was there that he studied and gained his doctorate. Chybinski’s professional life continued to be dominated by university-related work, al though he mentioned repeatedly that he did not like teaching. He only really felt good when pursuing his own passions. His love of early Polish music, for example, was realised in two ways: as the author of essays on the musical culture of past centuries and on the output of early Polish composers, and as the editor of works by early Polish composers and editor-in-chief of the series Wydawnictwo Dawnej Muzyki Polskiej [Early polish music edition]. His greatest love was the mountains. Excursions into the Podhale foothills and trips to Zakopane took up all Chybinski’s free time: he trekked through the mountains, met with his close friends Juliusz Zborowski, Jan Stanislaw Bystroń, Bronislaw Romaniszyn and Jan Zyg munt Robel (as he wrote: ‘all united by the slogan of unpretentiousness and anti-convention ality, all sons of Zakopane’), conducted ethnographic research and recorded highland folklore. During the second half of the
thirties, he also prepared (to a commission from the Warsaw Music Society) a monograph of his beloved composer Mieczysław Karłowicz (volume 1 of Kronika życia artysty i taternika [A chronicle of the life of an artist and Tatran mountaineer]), as well as planning а book about Edvard Grieg, which never came to fruition. He consistently 212
Summary popularised knowledge about the music of Grieg in particular, and Norwegian music in gen eral, preparing series of lectures on the subject for his students and persuading some of them to study Grieg’s music (doctoral dissertations by Jerzy Freiheiter, Maria Ramert, Jarosława Kolodij and Józef Μ. Chomiński). The letters sent from Lviv and Fribourg were less abundant during the last months before the outbreak of war than previously. In 1939 the two musicologists exchanged just a handful of letters. Chybiński excused himself by citing the depression he had suffered following the death of his mother, as well as the excessive amount of university duties (as per usual), extra lectures as part of the ‘Summer Institute of Art’ organised in Zakopane in 1939, and contin uing work on the second volume of his monograph of Mieczysław Karłowicz. He still hoped that all those problems would soon be resolved, and his last pre-war letter, written in late July, ends with the words: ‘I conclude this epistle in the hope that it will be the first in a new series of correspondence’ (letter from Zakopane, 26 July 1939). That did not come about. The cor respondence was interrupted for a long time by the war. Chybiński next made contact with Bronarski more than two years later, in December 1941. The professional ‘pen-friendship’ between the two musicologists, lasting for thirty years, comprised almost four hundred letters. Prepared for this publication were eighty-eight letters sent from Switzerland (in the Chybiński archive held in the Jagiellonian Library of Cracow, in box 6, under the
shelf-mark B-26, letters 88—176; as previously, I have adopted the abbre viation AACh-BJ and the shelf-mark B-26/88, etc.) and almost one hundred sent to Geneva and Fribourg (in the Chybiński archive held in Poznań University Library, which includes a bundle of the professor’s letters donated to Poznań, while Bronarski was still alive, through Anna Porębowiczowa, fols 98-173, with some letters written on two leaves). Within those collections, the dating begins in early January 1934 and ends with letters written in late July 1939 (the letters are marked, as previously, AACh-BUAM, Bronarski archive, fol. 98, etc.). The group of letters is complemented by several newly discovered letters held in the Bronarski Family Archive (Polish Catholic Mission in Marly, Switzerland). Translated by John Comber 213

The new periodical differed from its predecessor in that it contained ‘exclusively scholarly works from the field of musicology, [.] exclusively scholarly, so being the result of independent scholarly research, and not pop ularising works in musicology, reporting more or less independently on phenomena that are also the subject of scholarly interests’.1 Once again, one of the main authors and trusted collaborators on the periodical was the Chopin expert Ludwik Bronarski.
Translated by John Comber 213 |
