Zusammenfassung: | In Terror Capitalism anthropologist Darren Byler theorizes the contemporary Chinese colonization of the Uyghur Muslim minority group in the northwest autonomous region of Xinjiang. He shows that the mass detention of over one million Uyghurs in "reeducation camps" is part of processes of resource extraction in Uyghur lands that have led to what he calls terror capitalism-a configuration of ethnoracialization, surveillance, and mass detention that in this case promotes settler colonialism. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in the regional capital Ürümchi, Byler shows how media infrastructures, the state's enforcement of "Chinese" cultural values, and the influx of Han Chinese settlers contribute to Uyghur dispossession and their expulsion from the city. He particularly attends to the experiences of young Uyghur men-who are the primary target of state violence-and how they develop masculinities and homosocial friendships to protect themselves against gendered, ethnoracial, and economic violence. By tracing the political and economic stakes of Uyghur colonization, Byler demonstrates that state-directed capitalist dispossession is coconstructed with a colonial relation of domination |

Jan 2022) In Terror Capitalism anthropologist Darren Byler theorizes the contemporary Chinese colonization of the Uyghur Muslim minority group in the northwest autonomous region of Xinjiang. By tracing the political and economic stakes of Uyghur colonization, Byler demonstrates that state-directed capitalist dispossession is coconstructed with a colonial relation of domination In English SOCIAL SCIENCE / Anthropology / Cultural & Social bisacsh Detention of persons China Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu Human rights China Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu Masculinity China Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu Men China Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu Identity Mineral industries Corrupt practices China Uighur (Turkic people) China Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu Social conditions Umerziehungslager (DE-588)1246901900 gnd rswk-swf Überwachung (DE-588)4134175-2 gnd rswk-swf Uiguren (DE-588)4061491-8 gnd rswk-swf Unterdrückung (DE-588)4257314-2 gnd rswk-swf Ürümqi (DE-588)4215400-5 gnd rswk-swf Sinkiang (DE-588)4077460-0 gnd rswk-swf Sinkiang (DE-588)4077460-0 g Ürümqi (DE-588)4215400-5 g Uiguren (DE-588)4061491-8 s Umerziehungslager (DE-588)1246901900 s Überwachung (DE-588)4134175-2 s Unterdrückung (DE-588)4257314-2 s DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, hardcover 978-1-4780-1502-4 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, paperback 978-1-4780-1764-6 https://www.degruyter.com/isbn/9781478022268 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
