Surveys the current debates in modern literature and provides a wide selection of translated sources The Emperor Justinian had a long and influential reign, from ad 527 to 565. This was an important period in the transition between the classical and Byzantine worlds, and one which saw significant territorial changes and religious developments. Many of Justinian's reforms, such as those in the governance of the empire and his codification of its laws, had a long-lasting influence. The first section of this book outlines the current questions being asked about Justinian today, including the lands and peoples shaped by his foreign policies. The second section presents over 80 documents, including English translations of contemporary written sources, numismatic and epigraphic evidence and images of the imperial couple, coins and other objects. With features including a chronology, glossary, essay questions and further reading, this is a key text for the study of Justinian that offers a fresh account of his remarkable reign. |
