ENGLISH SUMMARY Memorial to the Murdered Roma in Kalynivka (until 1960 - Holyshi, until 2016 - Zhovtneve) Historical Background Under National Socialism, which had racial ideology at its core, the culturally, linguistically, religiously, and socially diverse groups of Roma in Europe were marginalized and persecuted. The process of persecu tion became radicalized after the German invasion of the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941. Alongside the Jewish population, Nazi extermi nation policies targeted the nomadic, and then also the settled Roma. They were shot and buried in numerous pits. Many of the murder sites were forgotten after the war. Most of the victims still remain unidenti fied to this day. In the German-occupied territories and those of their allies at least 250 thousand Roma were murdered ֊ either in camps or in the places where they lived. The vast majority of the Ukrainian Roma population - estimated at over 12 thousand children, women, and men ֊ were murdered during the German occupation of Ukraine, in the Romanian zone of occupa tion, between the Dniester and the Southern Bug rivers (named at the time as Transnistria), over 11 thousand of the 25 thousand Roma, deported from Romanian territories, perished. Holyshi under German occupation The historical events in Holyshi demonstrate how National Socialist persecution policies were implemented even in remote areas. In Sep tember 1941, local policemen took Mrs Shapiro and her three chil dren - who were local Jews - to Olevsk, where they were evidently murdered. The policemen subsequently divided the
personal posses sions of the family amongst themselves. In the fall of 1942, local po-
31 (icemen arrested an unknown Jewish man and then murdered him in the livestock cemetery. According to the Soviet Extraordinary State Commission, 32 Roma were murdered in the hamlet of Batseve Hutor on the outskirts of Holyshi. According to statements from elderly local residents, the Roma were locked inside a barn that was then set on fire. Those who tried to flee were shot. Children were also among those killed. The Roma were evi dently using the rural location as a hiding place. The killings were prob ably part of a deliberate campaign of extermination against the Roma, one that took place before the surrounding villages were burnt down. In the course of the German anti-partisan operations the village of Holyshi was destroyed by fire on July 20 and on 8 August 1943 and between 35 and 92 residents were murdered. The rest fled into the surrounding forests. The neighboring Batseve hamlet was also burned down on 20 July 1943 and 14 residents murdered. Justice and Remembrance In May 1944, the Soviet Extraordinary State Commission began investigating the German crimes committed in the Olevsk rayon. The commission recorded the names of 35 villagers murdered in Holyshi and the killing of 32 Roma. In 1945,1947, and 1948 three local po licemen were convicted in Olevsk. The murder of the Roma was not part of the investigations. The human remains were buried at the site of the crime. The wooden cross placed there decayed with time, and the area became overgrown. As part of the international project «Protecting Memory», in the spring of 2019 a memorial stone and this information
stele were dedicated to the Roma victims. The site today stands as a memorial for tolerance and respect towards national and ethnic minorities and against the centu ries of discrimination and marginalization of the Roma. Visitors are re quested to conduct themselves in a dignified manner. About the “Protecting Memory” Project The international project Protecting Memory” works both to trans form the neglected and forgotten mass graves of Jews and Roma into dignified places of remembrance and information points and to pre serve the memory of the victims for the present and future.
