MAXINE HONG KINGSTON Maxine Hong Kingston made a stunning entrance on the American literary scene with the National Book Critics Circle Award-winning The Woman Warrior (1976), her “memoirs of a childhood among ghosts.” An account of growing up Chinese American in Stockton, California, the book is at once an audacious feat of imaginative storytelling and a pathbreaking work of feminist autobiography, drawing on the myths, folktales, and family stories her mother brought over from China to make sense of a trans formed life in the United States. uThe Woman Warrior changed American culture,” writes Hua Hsu in The New Yorker. “For those who understood where Kingston was coming from, it was encourage ment that they could tell stories, too. For those who didn’t, The Woman Warrior became the definitive telling of the Asian immigrant experience, at a time when there weren’t many to choose from.” Kingston called The Woman Warrior her “mother book.” The National Book Award-winning China Men, from 1980, is her “father-book.” Spanning a grand geographical and historical canvas, it envisions the fives of Kingston’s male relatives who immigrated to America—men whom she called, in the book’s original title, “Gold Mountain Heroes,” referring to the Chinese name for America. China Men, she has observed, is also her attempt “to write an American language that has Chinese accents ... creating some thing new.” Taken together, The Woman Warrior and China Men offer a profound, genre-defying nar rative of the American experience. Tripmaster Monkey: His Fake Book (1989), Kingston’s third book,
is a wildly inventive novel about fifthgeneration Chinese American Wittman Ah Sing, a Berkeley graduate and poet whose experience of the San Francisco Beat scene upends his understanding of himself and his heritage. An ebullient evocation of Northern California’s 1960s counterculture, Trip master Monkey pays inspired, freewheeling tribute to the Chinese epics The Water Margin and Journey to the West.
CONTINUED FROM FRONT FLAP As a special feature, this volume includes a series of essays from 1978 reflecting on her life in Hawaii, later collected as Hawaii One Summer—personal musings whose subjects range from a contentious Asian Amer ican writers conference to home-buying, surfing, and the work of the Beat poet Lew Welch. Also included are hard-to-find essays about the creative process and Kingston’s exasperated, insightful account of how reviewers of The Woman Warrior fell prey to lazy stereotypes about the “exotic” and “inscrutable” East, those “fiilse ways of looking at us” that “freeze us into the position of being always alien.”
