SUMMARY On historical imagination* Exercises in hermeneutics he book consists of five parts, which are - from the methodologi cal point of view - some kind of exercises in historical hermeneu tics. It opens with a study on the search for traces (clues) of the reception of the thoughts of an American theorist of history, Hayden White, in Polish methodology and the history of historiography. I also pose here the question of what we - a community of researchers of the past - actually owe to him. And whether White is a closed chapter in history and historiography, or on the contrary, there is something to come back to. In this sense, the hermeneutics of reception becomes or may become a new opening. An openness also to co-create the nar rative theory and to expand the boundaries of historical imagination researched by White. In the second case, the pretext for writing this book has derived from finding after many years, in the home archive of Jerzy Topolski, the outline of the last, lost book of the professor, Methodology of His tory at the Threshold of the 21st Century. Of course, it can be treated as a vision competitive to the classic narrative theory by White and it will probably be perceived as such by many, but for me it was above all important that the hermeneutic reconstruction of its content clearly indicates the enormous extent of intellectual work that the author of How to Write and Understand History? The Secrets of Historical Narrative has carried out within those couple of years between these two books. What is impressive is not so much the scope of his
readings (Topolski got us used to it), but the monumental skill of navigating such sepa- T
256 Summary rate disciplines and specialties as philosophy of science, philosophy of language, semiotics, theory of literature, discourse theory, methodology of the humanities or theory of history, which together constitute the intellectual background for the New theory of historical narrative that Topolski was developing. It was both a challenge and a great pleasure to track these cues and to follow his thought mindfully. The starting point for the third part was the phenomenon of so cial reception of Paweł Jasienica’s works, which - many years before Norman Davies - shaped the way Poles think about their own history. What was so special about his vision of the history of Poland that it captured the historical imagination of several generations? In order to answer this question, it was necessary to return to a reading of Piast Poland, Jagiellonian Poland and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and subject these texts to a thorough hermeneutic analysis. Its result was sometimes surprising also for the writer of these words . The work on The Books of Jacob by Olga Tokarczuk (fourth study) was similar. The historical imagination of the Polish Nobel Prize winner is widely known and admired in the world, but it was about looking at her work from the perspective of metahistory: showing Tokarczuk as a culture that learns history. In its own, extremely original way of reading the world that no longer exists. Naturally, the category of his torical imagination as a subject of study obviously refers to Hayden White’s Metahistory and his research on European historical imagina tion in
the nineteenth century. I close the essay on White’s reception in Poland with the question of what his concept of historical imagina tion would look like if, instead of Western European historiography, he worked on the historiography of Central and Eastern Europe, es pecially the one which, like Polish, had to function in the absence of the state and - in a sense - be a symbolic substitute for one. Following this path, I look at Jasienica, Norman Davies and Olga Tokarczuk as narrative representations of the historical imagination of successive generations of Poles. Finally, there would be no last text without me watching and re flecting on the video The Unconquered, commissioned by the Institute of National Remembrance. It represents a new kind of hypertext, specific for digital humanities and e-History. In order to cognitively face such videotexts, we need new hermeneutics and new research tools. This is what the last story is about. And also about the times that are to come when the social historical imagination will be dominated by messages
On historical imagination. appropriate for digital culture. It is the kingdom of The Witcher and his successors, who - like Jacob Frank (the main character of the novel by Olga Tokarczuk) - will be more embedded in historical realities than the character created by Andrzej Sapkowski. Thanks to this, they will gain additional power to shape minds, especially young minds. This is an appealing vision for all sort of creators. However, a conscious creator-humanist will always face the question / challenge: to what extent new videotexts of culture constructed with his participation will shape historically enslaved minds, and to what extent will they serve the cause of freedom / subjectivity of a human as a perpetrator of history. Homo metahistoricus, one reflecting on history, should always have this ethical dimension of science in front of one’s eyes. 257
