From the seventeenth century onward, penal transportation was a key strategy of British imperial rule, exemplified by deportations first to the Americas and later to Australia. Case studies from the insular prisons of Bengkulu, Penang, and Singapore illuminate another carceral regime in the Indian Ocean World that brought South Asia and Southeast Asia together through a global system of forced migration and coerced labor. A major contribution to histories of crime and punishment, prisons, law, labor, transportation, migration, colonialism, and the Indian Ocean World, Empire of Convicts narrates the experiences of Indian bandwars (convicts) and shows how they exercised agency in difficult situations, fashioning their own worlds and even becoming "their own warders." Anand A. Yang brings long journeys across kala pani (black waters) to life in a deeply researched and engrossing account that moves fluidly between local and global contexts"-- |

Yang brings long journeys across kala pani (black waters) to life in a deeply researched and engrossing account that moves fluidly between local and global contexts"-- Geschichte 1789-1914 gnd rswk-swf Zwangsarbeit (DE-588)4139439-2 gnd rswk-swf Strafkolonie (DE-588)4443911-8 gnd rswk-swf Inder (DE-588)4026711-8 gnd rswk-swf Südostasien (DE-588)4058448-3 gnd rswk-swf Convict labor / Southeast Asia / 19th century / Case studies East Indians / Southeast Asia / 19th century / Case studies Penal colonies / Southeast Asia / History / 19th century Convict labor East Indians Penal colonies Case studies History Southeast Asia Südostasien (DE-588)4058448-3 g Inder (DE-588)4026711-8 s Strafkolonie (DE-588)4443911-8 s Zwangsarbeit (DE-588)4139439-2 s Geschichte 1789-1914 z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-0-5209-6759-5 The California world history library 31 (DE-604)BV017242392 31 V:DE-576;B:DE-21 application/pdf http://swbplus.bsz-bw.de/bsz1700105906inh.htm 20210424193904 Inhaltsverzeichnis V:DE-576;B:DE-21 application/pdf http://swbplus.bsz-bw.de/bsz1700105906kla.htm 20210424193904 Klappentext |
