Summary The proposed monograph provides materials from archaeological excavations led by P.I. Shulga in 1992-2002 in the Sen telek River Valley in the Charyshsky District of the Altai Territory (Russia) (Fig. 1,2; see Appendix 2, Fig. 1). The monograph also includes materials from burial grounds Mashenka-1 and Shchuchiy Log-1 located downstream of the Charysh River (see Appendix 2, Fig. 60-67). The materials are of undeniable interest since they come from a poorly studied contact zone of cultures of the Altai Mountains and the foothill plain. The monograph provides data on 32 examined items. The earliest items are mounds of the Afanasievo culture recently dated to the 31st-29th centuries BC (Поляков, Святко, Степанова, 2019). The culture is believed to be left by the Caucasian population who came from the west, who had already mastered bronze metallurgy and cattle breeding. They were discovered in four burial grounds Pokrovka-4 (see Appendix 2, Fig. 4-6), Pokrovsky Log-4 (see Appendix 2, Fig. 13, 14, В, Г), Pokrovsky Log-5 (see Appendix 2, Fig. 39), and Shchuchiy Log-1 (see Appendix 2, Fig. 64-67). The mounds were represented by wide rings composed of stones with a diameter of 3 to 14 m. The dead people were buried on their backs with bent legs, head to the southwest or northeast, in small graves up to 1.2 m deep. These are one of the westernmost burials of the Afanasievo culture, with its culture area being located in the Republic of Altai. For some time later, items 3 and 4 in the burial ground Pokrovka-4 are dated to the 3rd millennium BC (see Appendix 2, Fig. 7-10).
They are similar to the Afanasievo culture, however the dead people were buried near the soil surface and with flatbottomed vessels. These burials are tentatively assigned to a separate type. In addition to the Bronze Age materials, mounds of the 7th-3rd centuries BC are also of particular interest. Five mounds in the burial ground Pokrovsky Log-4 belong to the early Scythian period, including elite mound 27 with a stone embankment and burial of four horses (see Appendix 2, Fig. 17-19). Based on the design of the mound with a stone shell and dromos, it was left by immigrants from Kazakhstan. The same initial source of migration is indicated by burials of the Mayemir type from mound 7 of the burial grounds Pokrovsky Log-4 (see Appendix 2, Fig. 16) and Mashenka-1 (see Appendix 2, Fig. 60-63). They were made in deep pits, and the heads of the dead people were oriented to the northern sector. Two burials of the Biyken culture made at a surface in the stone boxes were found in the burial ground Pokrovsky Log-4 (see Appendix 2, Fig. 15, Б, B). According to available data, in the middle regions along the valleys of the Charysh River and its tributaries in the 8th to 6th centuries BC, there was a mixture of carriers of the Biyken and Mayemir cultures, as well as the population from the territory of Kazakhstan (mound 27), and possibly China (burial grounds Mashenka-1, Chesnokovo-1) (Шульга П.И., 1997). A large number ofbronze parts of the horse equipment on a buried ascended horse in the burial ground Mashenka-1 are of particular importance. Due to this find, it was possible to
trace the device of the bridle and breastplate of a horse of the 7th century BC for the first time in the east of the Scythian world (Fig. 46; see Appendix 2, Fig. 61, B; 63) (Шульга П.И., 19986; 2008, рис. 34, 36). A significant part of mounds in the Sentelek River valley belongs to the late period of the Pazyryk culture of the 4th to 3rd centuries, including “tsarist” mound 1 from the burial ground Urochishche Balchikova-3 (see Appendix 2, Fig. 40-55). In addition to the fence of plates about 1.5 m long and a “petal-shaped” crepida rarely found in the Altai Mountains (Fig. 26-28; see Appendix 2, Fig. 41, 45, 46), east of mound 1, under a layer of humus, stelae-balbals up to 4.55 m high were found. Nineteen stelae were installed in ancient times in a row strictly along the same line with an azimuth of 95 degrees (Fig. 24, 29-38; see Appendix 2, Fig. 41, 48-55, A). The distance between the centers of the pit-nests of the first ten stelae was 3.2 m. There were potholes indicating the depth of their installation in 107
Summary the pits in the lower part of the stelae (0.7-0.9 m). Obviously, this funeral and memorial complex was erected under the control of the ministers of the cult. It is still the only case of almost complete preservation of the elite mound of stelae and a bypass fence in the area of the Pazyryk culture (the Altai Mountains, Eastern Kazakhstan, the northern part of Xinjiang, the western part of Mongolia). During excavations in 1994,1995, and 2000, stelae were installed in their pits (see Appendix 2, Fig. 34-38). The Pazyryk culture includes seven more mounds of the 4th to 3rd centuries BC in the burial ground Pokrovsky Log-5. Six of them contain traces of rites using fire, and even re-buried burnt bones of a person in mound Cl (see Appendix 2, Fig. 24, A). At the same time, initially, in these six mounds, peculiar crypts were blocked on the surface by the heels, on which temporary pyramids (cones) were built (see Appendix 2, Fig. 38, A). When studying these structures specifically, an assumption was made on successive changes in the design of mounds, and time-stretched funeral and memorial rituals (Шульга П.И., 19976, 20166). There, in Sentelek, numerous facts of the stone structure drift (mound embankments, laying, and others) down the slope were noticed, while the deepened graves did not shift (Шульга П.И., 20166, c. 270). The early Middle Ages are represented by mounds 4-7 investigated at “tsarist” mound 1 in the burial ground Urochishche Balchikova-3 (Fig. 3942, see Appendix 2, Fig. 41, 56-59), as well as the entrance burial of a man with a horse in mound Cl in the
burial ground Pokrovsky Log-5 (see Appendix 2, Fig. 22). Generally, excavations in the Sentelek River Valley have provided many significant materials in the ancient history of Altai, and “tsarist” mound 1 of the burial ground Urochishche Balchikova-3 became a well-known tourist destination. Note that over 800 students from the Altai Territory who lived in summer camps in the Sentelek River Valley took part in the excavations.
