Zusammenfassung: | "The Last Muslim Conquest chronicles the emergence of the Ottoman dynasty and its conquests in Europe, offering a new synthesis of the Ottoman impact on early modern Europe. In telling the story of conquest and imperial rivalry, the book introduces myriad characters, from sultans, kings, popes, generals, and admirals, to lesser-known but equally colorful viziers, frontier governors, envoys, interpreters, spies, and pirates. The narrative brings to light the characteristics of Ottoman strategy and statecraft, challenging long-held views. Historian Gábor Ágoston rejects the "clash of civilizations" narrative by demonstrating the multi-ethnic and multi-confessional character of the empire and its entanglements in European politics. He examines the varied methods of Ottoman conquest, including dynastic marriages, religious accommodation, and the incorporation of the conquered people into the Ottoman military and administration. But Ágoston also rebuffs more recent distortions of Ottoman history that have turned Ottoman sultans into Renaissance princes and blurred the cultural fault lines between Islam and Christendom. He argues that while the Ottomans were an integral part of Europe and, in many ways, a "European" empire, theirs was a polity principally shaped by Turco-Iranian and Islamic models. He also demonstrates how religion - both Ottoman holy wars and Christian crusades - remained paramount for legitimating policies and mobilizing one's supporters for conquest and defense. Chapters on military capabilities, frontier management, lawfare, and diplomacy offer a new explanation of the gradual shift in power between the Ottomans and their European rivals, reframing the old story of Ottoman decline"-- |

A DYNASTY’S INTEGRAL ROLE IN THE EMERGENCE OF EARLY MODERN EL RO PE The Ottomans have long been viewed as despots who conquered through sheer military might, and whose dynasty was peripheral to those of Europe. The Last Muslim Conquest shows how Ottoman statecraft was far more pragmatic and sophisticated than previously acknowledged and how the Ottoman dynasty was a crucial player in the power struggles of early modern Europe. Gabor Agoston captures the grand sweep of Ottoman history, from the dynasty’s stun ning rise to power at the turn of the fourteenth century to the Siege of Vienna in 1683, which ended Ottoman incursions into central Europe. Bringing vividly to life the intrigues of sultans, kings, popes, and spies, this panoramic book offers new perspectives on the gradual shift in power between the Ottomans and their European rivals and reframes the old story of Ottoman decline. |

Chapters on military capabilities, frontier management, lawfare, and diplomacy offer a new explanation of the gradual shift in power between the Ottomans and their European rivals, reframing the old In telling the story of conquest and imperial rivalry, the book introduces myriad characters, from sultans, kings, popes, generals, and admirals, to lesser-known but equally colorful viziers, frontier governors, envoys, interpreters, spies, and pirates. Chapters on military capabilities, frontier management, lawfare, and diplomacy offer a new explanation of the gradual shift in power between the Ottomans and their European rivals, reframing the old story of Ottoman decline"-- Osmanen (DE-588)118747797 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1280-1683 gnd rswk-swf Eroberung (DE-588)4264420-3 gnd rswk-swf Bündnis (DE-588)4069715-0 gnd rswk-swf Rivalität (DE-588)4178251-3 gnd rswk-swf Krieg (DE-588)4033114-3 gnd rswk-swf Regierung (DE-588)4049012-9 gnd rswk-swf Strategie (DE-588)4057952-9 gnd rswk-swf Herrschaft (DE-588)4024596-2 gnd rswk-swf Militär (DE-588)4039305-7 gnd rswk-swf Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 gnd rswk-swf Osmanisches Reich (DE-588)4075720-1 gnd rswk-swf Turkey / History / Ottoman Empire, 1288-1918 Turkey / Civilization / 1288-1918 Turkey / History, Military Turkey / Foreign relations / Europe Europe / Foreign relations / Turkey Osmanen (DE-588)118747797 p Herrschaft (DE-588)4024596-2 s Regierung (DE-588)4049012-9 s Strategie (DE-588)4057952-9 s Militär (DE-588)4039305-7 s Geschichte 1280-1683 z DE-604 Osmanisches Reich (DE-588)4075720-1 g Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 g Eroberung (DE-588)4264420-3 s Krieg (DE-588)4033114-3 s Rivalität (DE-588)4178251-3 s Bündnis (DE-588)4069715-0 s Äquivalent Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 2023 978-0-691-20539-7 (DE-604)BV049843968 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-0-691-20538-0 (DE-604)BV047370633 Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033045415&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033045415&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Klappentext |
