There is tendency in many countries to blame those experiencing homelessness for their condition. This multidisciplinary British Academy volume argues that changing public perceptions of homelessness, by changing its representation, is key to ending it. The way that people experiencing homelessness are portrayed is a crucial factor in the willingness of politicians to tackle the problem. This volume argues that representation must be made central to any attempt to solve the homelessness crisis. Representing Homelessness combines academic research with firsthand accounts of homelessness. It describes how people affected by homeless ness are perceived as objects through a process of dehumanised perception, and how negative representations are perpetuated in the news media as forms of Othering which serve to maintain the status quo. It then provides examples of how such Othering can be overcome through collaboration and by providing a platform for people affected by homelessness. Representing Homelessness argues that stereotypical representations of homelessness, while useful for charity fundraising, do more harm than good. It concludes that charity and research organisations tasked with dealing with homelessness must include greater representation from people with direct lived experience of homelessness. Homelessness is unlikely to be solved without the active participation of those most directly affected.
