Zusammenfassung: | "Many African Americans of the Civil War era felt a personal connection to Abraham Lincoln. For the first time in their lives, an occupant of the White House seemed concerned about the welfare of their race. Indeed, despite the tremendous injustice and discrimination that they faced, African Americans now had confidence to write to the president and to seek redress of their grievances. Their letters express the dilemmas, doubts, and dreams of both recently enslaved and free people in the throes of dramatic change. For many, writing Lincoln was a last resort. Yet their letters were often full of determination, making explicit claims to the rights of U.S. citizenship in a wide range of circumstances. This compelling collection presents more than 120 letters from African Americans to Lincoln, most of which have never before been published. They offer unflinching, intimate, and often heart-wrenching portraits of Black soldiers' and civilians' experiences in wartime. As readers continue to think critically about Lincoln's image as the 'Great Emancipator,' this book centers African Americans' own voices to explore how they felt about the president and how they understood the possibilities and limits of the power invested in the federal government"-- |

For the first time in their lives, an occupant of the White House seemed concerned about the welfare of their race. This compelling collection presents more than 120 letters from African Americans to Lincoln, most of which have never before been published. They offer unflinching, intimate, and often heart-wrenching portraits of Black soldiers' and civilians' experiences in wartime. As readers continue to think critically about Lincoln's image as the 'Great Emancipator,' this book centers African Americans' own voices to explore how they felt about the president and how they understood the possibilities and limits of the power invested in the federal government"-- Lincoln, Abraham 1809-1865 (DE-588)11857308X gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1861-1865 gnd rswk-swf Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Lincoln, Abraham / 1809-1865 / Correspondence African Americans / Correspondence African Americans / Social conditions / 19th century United States / History / Civil War, 1861-1865 / African Americans SOCIAL SCIENCE / Ethnic Studies / American / African American & Black Studies HISTORY / United States / Civil War Period (1850-1877) Lincoln, Abraham / 1809-1865 African Americans African Americans / Social conditions United States 1800-1899 History Personal correspondence (DE-588)4146609-3 Briefsammlung gnd-content (DE-588)4135952-5 Quelle gnd-content Lincoln, Abraham 1809-1865 (DE-588)11857308X p USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 s Geschichte 1861-1865 z DE-604 White, Jonathan W. 1979- (DE-588)1067678638 edt Lincoln, Abraham 1809-1865 (DE-588)11857308X rcp Medford, Edna Greene 1951- (DE-588)1154457451 aui Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-1-4696-6510-8 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, PDF 979-8-8908-5796-5 Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=032974396&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=032974396&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Klappentext |
