SUMMARY RURAL SETTLEMENTS AND DWELLINGS IN NORTHERN ALBANIA INTRODUCTION Until the beginning of the 20th century most of the population in our country lived in rural areas. In this perspective, the architecture created by this mass of people has an important place in the overall architectural creations of the Albanian population. Rural architecture includes all those constructions built by the people in order to fulfill their needs, such as houses, supporting buildings for the family economy, buildings for specific crafts, mills and so on. All these constructions seen together shine a light on the life of the rural population of a specific region in a specific historical period. We can gather data on these houses and on these settlements in the writings of different foreign authors who have passed through Albania, such as travelers, agents, military, tradespeople, counselors or Ambassadors, religious missionaries, or specialists of different fields, starting from the second half of the 19th century. Studies related to vernacular culture, including houses and settlements, have begun in Albania only after the Second World War. The first studies on rural architecture, housing in particular, belong to those working in ethnography. Given that these houses comprise a specific kind of study cases and entire regions or areas had been left out from the previous studies, it was an immediate need to deepen and develop these initial contributions. We have chosen the end of the 18th century until the beginning of the 20th century as the historical period of our study. This period of
time was chosen for two main reasons: first of all, it coincides with the period in the history of Albanian people when the conditions for economic, political and cultural unification of the population were being created; secondly, the oldest examples of houses reaching our days, given that housing, as the architectural category that is most affected by destruction and transformation, goes beyond this period only in a few cases. Never the least, we have gone beyond this period in the cases where there was material. The chosen methodology for the study of the architecture of rural houses in this part of the country has been the following: based on the material gathered on site we have assigned the prevailing types of the different regions. The regions that exhibited different typologies have been analyzed more in detail. Further on, we have
354 followed the geographical distribution of different typologies of houses in different regions. When doing so, we have put a specific emphasis on the characteristics that stood out in different typologies, or different variations of these typologies, in the different regions. While working on this analysis, we have witnessed that different regions show similar architectonic features in their buildings. While sharing the same functional schemes in plan, these buildings vary in their exterior architectonic features. These similarities give us the opportunity to group different regions of the North of Albania in bigger units. Thus, we have set apart groups of regions that are located in the North, in the North-East and in central part of mountainous region of North Albania. Although these denominations are geographical, we did not use that as a criterion in the divisions of the regions’ groups. Our work on dividing the groups has been based on the similarities of the architectonic features of the houses and on the analogies of their formulation processes. Besides the overall typological overview, attention has been given to other problematic issues concerning the creation of architectural works, such as the architectonic traits, the construction, the decoration, and the implementation of architectural criteria, such as the relations between the program and the implementation, the typology and differentiation factors, the connections between architectural formulation and materials, etc., which help emphasize the character of the vernacular architecture of northern Albania.
Based on this study, we have selected the most representative examples of each topology ofhouses, or of each stage of development, in order to give them state protection. We believe that this study will help not only understanding these buildings, by giving material that is broader than the one of the protected monuments, but will also help judge on the fairness of our evaluation.

We have chosen the end of the 18th century until the beginning of the 20th century as the historical period of our study. This period of
time was chosen for two main reasons: first of all, it coincides with the period in the history of Albanian people when the conditions for economic, political and cultural unification of the population were being created; secondly, the oldest examples of houses reaching our days, given that housing, as the architectural category that is most affected by destruction and transformation, goes beyond this period only in a few cases. Never the least, we have gone beyond this period in the cases where there was material. The chosen methodology for the study of the architecture of rural houses in this part of the country has been the following: based on the material gathered on site we have assigned the prevailing types of the different regions. The regions that exhibited different typologies have been analyzed more in detail. Further on, we have
354 followed the geographical distribution of different typologies of houses in different regions. When doing so, we have put a specific emphasis on the characteristics that stood out in different typologies, or different variations of these typologies, in the different regions. While working on this analysis, we have witnessed that different regions show similar architectonic features in their buildings. While sharing the same functional schemes in plan, these buildings vary in their exterior architectonic features. These similarities give us the opportunity to group different regions of the North of Albania in bigger units. Thus, we have set apart groups of regions that are located in the North, in the North-East and in central part of mountainous region of North Albania. Although these denominations are geographical, we did not use that as a criterion in the divisions of the regions’ groups. Our work on dividing the groups has been based on the similarities of the architectonic features of the houses and on the analogies of their formulation processes. Besides the overall typological overview, attention has been given to other problematic issues concerning the creation of architectural works, such as the architectonic traits, the construction, the decoration, and the implementation of architectural criteria, such as the relations between the program and the implementation, the typology and differentiation factors, the connections between architectural formulation and materials, etc., which help emphasize the character of the vernacular architecture of northern Albania.
Based on this study, we have selected the most representative examples of each topology ofhouses, or of each stage of development, in order to give them state protection. We believe that this study will help not only understanding these buildings, by giving material that is broader than the one of the protected monuments, but will also help judge on the fairness of our evaluation.
