wards achieving a new artistic quality. Under his guid ance, colourful concert programmes were prepared that offered an integrated view of the bygone periods, and early music instruments were used to perform contemporary music by Estonian composers, which emerged as a new trend in the field. 1991-1996 the Viljandi Town Waits was led by the multi-instrumentalist Margus Kubo who had risen from the ranks of the ensemble. The period was marked by trips to the Scandinavian countries, Moscow and Vilnius. Members of the chapel participated in several courses in Renaissance music in Sweden, which led to networking and playing together with renowned spe cialists in early music and dance. Several of them (Erin Headley, Jane Gingell, Kaj Sylegård, David Kettlewell and others) would later perform at the Viljandi Early Music Festivals and conduct workshops. The period of Margus Kubo’s artistic leadership was characterised by original compilations of music and poetry performed in collaboration with actors from the Ugala Theatre. The years of activity when Peeter Klaas (1996-1998) and George Butler (2007-2009) were in charge were not long, yet added knew facets to the creative whole. In the following years the ensemble would perform without an appointed artistic leader. However, Arno Anton took care of the repertoire and Anti Einpaul acted as the manager. All musicians were still inspired by a strong wish to create music as well as a feeling of community. Although they lived in different cities, they still would find time for common rehearsals and performances. The collection 50 Years
ofEarly Music in Viljandi marks the half-century anniversary of the founding of the Viljandi Town Waits ֊ one of the oldest early music groups in Estonia. The book is based on the annals of the Viljandi Town Waits, newspaper articles, and memoires of the members of the ensemble. Its first part focuses on the history of the ensemble. Although being a small-town ensemble, the story of its formation and development nevertheless reflects the involvement with early music and its spread in Estonia on a broader scale. The book recalls the birth of the group, led by Tõnu Sepp, in the autumn of 1971, the acquiring of the instruments and repertoire as well as the first concerts. Already by the early 1980s the ensemble had reached a considerable level of artistic excellence, testified by its numerous concerts in Viljandi and in several other Estonian towns, but also in Kiev, Odessa and Trakai. In 1982 the Viljandi Town Waits initiated the Viljandi Early Music Festival that at the time took place under the name of a Summer Course. The year 1989 saw the beginning of a new stage in the activities of the Town Waits as it was bestowed the status of a semi-professional ensemble of the City of Viljandi. The status indicated the level of the salaries and the work load, but the aims were set higher as to the actual quality of performance: a semi-amateur col lective in name, in essence the Chapel strove towards attaing a professional level. After Tõnu Sepp left Viljandi in 1989, the ensemble continued under the leadership of his student Neeme Punder (in 1990-1991 and 1998-2005), who led it to

What has been considered important is the synthe sis of the arts ֊ music sounding the way it did in the previous centuries, enhanced by architecture, poetry, costumes, and interiors. This underlying idea has been supported by theatrical concert performances accompanied by historical dances. Starting from the year 2000, courses for young performers of early music have been part of the fes tival, with students as well as teachers of Estonian music schools and studios participating. During the four days of the course programme a musical concert performance is prepared. Ifin its earlier years the festival aimed at permeat ing the whole city with several open air concerts and performances, in the recent years it has been scaling down in that regard as its focus is rather on indoor concerts. Next to the Viljandi Folk Music Festival, the Viljan di Early Music Festival is an eagerly expected summer event both for the town’s citizens as well as visitors. It is not as populous, but rather a smaller-scale event offering quieter, more intimate impressions. The collection has four appendixes: a list of the people who have been active in the Viljandi Town Waits; a list of recordings by the ensemble from the archives of the Estonian Radio; a timeline of the Viljan di Early Music Festivals; and reminiscences from the members of the Viljandi Town Waits and their friends. The Viljandi Town Waits' last concert took place in 2016, but it has given rise to new collectives led by former students and teachers of the Viljandi Music School who have played in the ensemble: the Town Waits Brass
(Arno Anton), Cantores Vagantes (Reet Sukk and Taavi-Mats Utt), the early music ensemble of the Kiili School of the Arts (Heili Meibaum), the Rakvere-based Fiori (Piret Viliem), and others. The book’s second part concentrates on the Vil jandi Early Music Festival that was started in 1982 on the intitiative of Tõnu Sepp and has been chang ing its name as well as emphasis during the years. In the early years, the educational aspect concern ing playing the instruments and general knowl edge in the field of early music was foregrounded. Such specialists in the field as Hugo Lepnurm, Leo Normet, Heino Jürisalu, Andres Mustonen, Taivo Niitvägi, Tõnu Sepp and others were acting as lecturers and instrument teachers. The aim was to shape a shared sensibility and thought regarding early music. Starting from 1989, the summer courses evolved into a festival (which is the oldest of its kind in Es tonia) which has been organised up to these days. Thanks to the artistic leader Neeme Punder and his helpers (Tiit Jõgi, Priit Noorhani, Ülo Krigul, Aivar Trallmann and others), several renowned early mu sic groups and soloists, such as Conrad Steinmann and the Diferencias Ensemble, Hopkinson Smith, the Trio Veracini, Pierce Adams, Aleksei Lyubimov, the Egidius Kwartet, the Jouissance Ensemble, and others have found their way to Viljandi. 169

wards achieving a new artistic quality. Under his guid ance, colourful concert programmes were prepared that offered an integrated view of the bygone periods, and early music instruments were used to perform contemporary music by Estonian composers, which emerged as a new trend in the field. 1991-1996 the Viljandi Town Waits was led by the multi-instrumentalist Margus Kubo who had risen from the ranks of the ensemble. The period was marked by trips to the Scandinavian countries, Moscow and Vilnius. Members of the chapel participated in several courses in Renaissance music in Sweden, which led to networking and playing together with renowned spe cialists in early music and dance. Several of them (Erin Headley, Jane Gingell, Kaj Sylegård, David Kettlewell and others) would later perform at the Viljandi Early Music Festivals and conduct workshops. The period of Margus Kubo’s artistic leadership was characterised by original compilations of music and poetry performed in collaboration with actors from the Ugala Theatre. The years of activity when Peeter Klaas (1996-1998) and George Butler (2007-2009) were in charge were not long, yet added knew facets to the creative whole. In the following years the ensemble would perform without an appointed artistic leader. However, Arno Anton took care of the repertoire and Anti Einpaul acted as the manager. All musicians were still inspired by a strong wish to create music as well as a feeling of community. Although they lived in different cities, they still would find time for common rehearsals and performances. The collection 50 Years
ofEarly Music in Viljandi marks the half-century anniversary of the founding of the Viljandi Town Waits ֊ one of the oldest early music groups in Estonia. The book is based on the annals of the Viljandi Town Waits, newspaper articles, and memoires of the members of the ensemble. Its first part focuses on the history of the ensemble. Although being a small-town ensemble, the story of its formation and development nevertheless reflects the involvement with early music and its spread in Estonia on a broader scale. The book recalls the birth of the group, led by Tõnu Sepp, in the autumn of 1971, the acquiring of the instruments and repertoire as well as the first concerts. Already by the early 1980s the ensemble had reached a considerable level of artistic excellence, testified by its numerous concerts in Viljandi and in several other Estonian towns, but also in Kiev, Odessa and Trakai. In 1982 the Viljandi Town Waits initiated the Viljandi Early Music Festival that at the time took place under the name of a Summer Course. The year 1989 saw the beginning of a new stage in the activities of the Town Waits as it was bestowed the status of a semi-professional ensemble of the City of Viljandi. The status indicated the level of the salaries and the work load, but the aims were set higher as to the actual quality of performance: a semi-amateur col lective in name, in essence the Chapel strove towards attaing a professional level. After Tõnu Sepp left Viljandi in 1989, the ensemble continued under the leadership of his student Neeme Punder (in 1990-1991 and 1998-2005), who led it to

What has been considered important is the synthe sis of the arts ֊ music sounding the way it did in the previous centuries, enhanced by architecture, poetry, costumes, and interiors. This underlying idea has been supported by theatrical concert performances accompanied by historical dances. Starting from the year 2000, courses for young performers of early music have been part of the fes tival, with students as well as teachers of Estonian music schools and studios participating. During the four days of the course programme a musical concert performance is prepared. Ifin its earlier years the festival aimed at permeat ing the whole city with several open air concerts and performances, in the recent years it has been scaling down in that regard as its focus is rather on indoor concerts. Next to the Viljandi Folk Music Festival, the Viljan di Early Music Festival is an eagerly expected summer event both for the town’s citizens as well as visitors. It is not as populous, but rather a smaller-scale event offering quieter, more intimate impressions. The collection has four appendixes: a list of the people who have been active in the Viljandi Town Waits; a list of recordings by the ensemble from the archives of the Estonian Radio; a timeline of the Viljan di Early Music Festivals; and reminiscences from the members of the Viljandi Town Waits and their friends. The Viljandi Town Waits' last concert took place in 2016, but it has given rise to new collectives led by former students and teachers of the Viljandi Music School who have played in the ensemble: the Town Waits Brass
(Arno Anton), Cantores Vagantes (Reet Sukk and Taavi-Mats Utt), the early music ensemble of the Kiili School of the Arts (Heili Meibaum), the Rakvere-based Fiori (Piret Viliem), and others. The book’s second part concentrates on the Vil jandi Early Music Festival that was started in 1982 on the intitiative of Tõnu Sepp and has been chang ing its name as well as emphasis during the years. In the early years, the educational aspect concern ing playing the instruments and general knowl edge in the field of early music was foregrounded. Such specialists in the field as Hugo Lepnurm, Leo Normet, Heino Jürisalu, Andres Mustonen, Taivo Niitvägi, Tõnu Sepp and others were acting as lecturers and instrument teachers. The aim was to shape a shared sensibility and thought regarding early music. Starting from 1989, the summer courses evolved into a festival (which is the oldest of its kind in Es tonia) which has been organised up to these days. Thanks to the artistic leader Neeme Punder and his helpers (Tiit Jõgi, Priit Noorhani, Ülo Krigul, Aivar Trallmann and others), several renowned early mu sic groups and soloists, such as Conrad Steinmann and the Diferencias Ensemble, Hopkinson Smith, the Trio Veracini, Pierce Adams, Aleksei Lyubimov, the Egidius Kwartet, the Jouissance Ensemble, and others have found their way to Viljandi. 169
