Zusammenfassung: | In Show Time, Lee Ann Fujii asks why some perpetrators of political violence, from lynch mobs to genocidal killers, display their acts of violence so publicly and extravagantly. Closely examining three horrific and extreme episodes-the murder of a prominent Tutsi family amidst the genocide in Rwanda, the execution of Muslim men in a Serb-controlled village in Bosnia during the Balkan Wars, and the lynching of a twenty-two-year old Black farmhand on Maryland's Eastern Shore in 1933-Fujii shows how "violent displays" are staged to not merely to kill those perceived to be enemies or threats, but also to affect and influence observers, neighbors, and the larger society. Watching and participating in these violent displays profoundly transforms those involved, reinforcing political identities, social hierarchies, and power structures. Such public spectacles of violence also force members of the community to choose sides-openly show support for the goals of the violence, or risk becoming victims, themselves. Tracing the ways in which public displays of violence unfold, Show Time reveals how the perpetrators exploit the fluidity of social ties for their own ends |

Tracing the ways in which public displays of violence unfold, Show Time reveals how the perpetrators exploit the fluidity of social ties for their own ends Geschichte 1933 gnd rswk-swf Humanities & Human Rights International Studies Political Science & Political History SOCIAL SCIENCE / Violence in Society bisacsh Genocide Social aspects Rwanda History 20th century Lynching Social aspects Maryland History 20th century Massacres Social aspects Bosnia and Herzegovina History 20th century Political violence Social aspects Bosnia and Herzegovina History 20th century Political violence Social aspects Rwanda History 20th century Violence Psychological aspects History 20th century Violence Social aspects History 20th century Lynchjustiz (DE-588)4168383-3 gnd rswk-swf Völkermord in Ruanda (DE-588)4360701-9 gnd rswk-swf Bosnienkrieg (DE-588)4345999-7 gnd rswk-swf Massaker (DE-588)4300999-2 gnd rswk-swf Machtstruktur (DE-588)4246883-8 gnd rswk-swf Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 gnd rswk-swf Gruppenidentität (DE-588)4140349-6 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 s Lynchjustiz (DE-588)4168383-3 s Gruppenidentität (DE-588)4140349-6 s Machtstruktur (DE-588)4246883-8 s Geschichte 1933 z DE-604 Bosnienkrieg (DE-588)4345999-7 s Massaker (DE-588)4300999-2 s Völkermord in Ruanda (DE-588)4360701-9 s Finnemore, Martha 1959- (DE-588)13710586X edt Wood, Elisabeth Jean 1957- (DE-588)1057339490 aft Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-5017-5854-6 https://doi.org/10.1515/9781501758560 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
