Alexander and Pavel Svedomsky Alexander Svedomsky (1848-1911) and Pavel Svedomsky (1849-1904) are famous Russian artists ofa remarkable talent and unusual lot. Svedomsky’s painting art has com posed a particular page both in a European and in a Russian Academy art of the turn of the century (XIX-XX). They studied at first at Dusseldorf then at Munich Academy of Painting Art and in the studio of a famous painter Mikhai Munkachi. The artist-career of Svedomsky brothers may be liken to a three stages: German (1870-1875), Italian- and Russian-stage in the same time (since 1875 to the end of lifetime). 1886-1896 was a Kiev-stage of their creative lot. The famous art historian Adrian Prakhov invited them to take part in the monumental painting in the recently built Cathedral of St Vladivir in Kiev. The brothers Svedomsky together with their friend V. Kotarbinsky produced a series painting compositions to the Christological cycle that was including The Raising of Lazarus”, The Last Sapper”, Agony at the Garden”, Entry to Jerusalem , The Crucifixion , Trial of Christ for Pilate and others. The painters kept on working at the same times on the monumental painting in Glukhov (Ukraine) in a Three-Anastasievskaya church. During the years spent working in Kiev and Glukhov they painted much pictures to the European and Russian painting exhibitions, kept house in there Perm estate where they spent their childhood and where they spent every year summers working in their both big studio in Mikhailovsky Zavod as in Rome. They were nicknamed bird of passage . Alexander and Pavel
worked following of Academy art. They were artists of the Post-Academy tradition. Alexander Svedomsky was the remarkable landscape painter. He concentrated on Mediterranean subjects for his art, on semigenre and historical re construction landscapes. Well-known in Russia A. Svedomsk/ s pictures are only a little and namely The banks of the Tiber”, In the hotel yard in Rome , Street in Pompeii”. Oth er cycle of A. Svedomsky s works conceived while the artist is Mikhailovsky landscapes. The ordinariness of estate life depicted in all these efforts are charged with a highly emo tional lyricism conveyed through the light and colouring of plain-air manner of painting. Pavel Svedomsky was historical genre artist. Not despite the traditional academ ic manner, no despite the conventional frame of academic art, but because of them his works reveal especially pronounced individual handling to the problem of form and con tent. P. Svedomsky s pictures that are known in Russia including Medusa”, Orgy”, Lone ly Roman”, The Roman at a reservoir , Old cat”, Messalina” and some others conceive a perfect mastership of the artistic form, plastics, the mystery of the painting surface and the radiant colouring. Ehe paintings of both brothers are distinguished by subtle irony and appeal to metaphor. Many creations by Alexander and Pave Svedomsky are not widely known. Most of them have been scattered throughout various museums, countries and continents. Their creations in Russia are disseminated throughout the art museums of St Petersburg, Omsk, Novgorod, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod,
Perm, Tomsk and Kirov. Basic collections Svedomsky՞ s painting are kept in a State Tretyakov Gallery, Kiev National Museum of Russian Art, Odessa Art Museum and Sarapul Museum-Reserve. Svedomsky’s entire œuvre is perme ated with the fascination by Italy and by Rome. Their painting art composed a particular page both in the world and in a Russia. 203
