С2оиіеиі$ The first chapter, 3 in which Alexi becomes enchanted by “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits and goes exploring abandoned buildings with big sister Anna and their cousins. At Grandmom’s in Lapland, the youngster grabs a wasp nest by accident; at home in Espoo, he hears WA.S.P. emanating from his sister’s stereo. At the age of five, Alexi almost drowns but soon learns how to swim and also how to ride around on his bike. Although the ability to read is ignited thanks to a famous Finnish educational fairytale character, school fails to capture the boy’s imagination. But what on earth is a “creek-crawk”? The second chapter, 24 where the future guitar hero is found putting himself through punishing practice sessions on the piano and the violin. Not to mention studying music theory, the knowledge of which Alexi still regards as a prerequisite for a proper musician. The story of his father’s band is reiterated, as are his mother’s achievements in classical music. The Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Passion Warfare by Steve Vai make a massive impression. Alexi gets his first electric guitar and meets Jaska Raatikainen, just in from Lappeenranta, who will go on to become Alexi’s best friend and Children of Bodom’s drummer.
The third chapter, 44 which follows Alexi acquiring broad know-how at the Oulunkylä Pop Jazz Conservatory. A certain group is founded and Sepultura’s Arise leaves our protagonist floored by its brutal force. Henkka Seppälä steps into the spotlight. He is just what Alexi’s band has been searching for: A bass player well versed in underground metal. Alexander Kuoppala and Anssi Kippo also appear on the scene, but being less crucial for the saga, they remain in the background. With a suitably scary name for the band already pulled from a thick Thesaurus, their idiosyncratic sound begins to develop. The fourth chapter, 62 in which amphetamine-flieled creeps brandishing knives stalk and haunt the underage Alexi forcing him to leave home. He settles in Helsinki, sleeping at his sister’s place or in a seedy part of town with random ladies in need of company. A new rehearsal space provides sanctuary and the backdrop for Alexi to meet his friture wife, Kimberly Goss. The last ace in the band’s pack of cards appears in the form of keyboard player Janne Wirman. A rapid transformation takes place as IneartheD become Children of Bodom and Ewo Pohjola assists in the birth of debut album Something Wild. The fifth chapter 78 opens a very important door as Children ofBodom get to tour Europe for the first time. After a rocky start, the rules of the road are imparted by Peter Tägtgren in his inimitable way. He becomes a mentor of sorts for the entire group, but especially for its frontman. We hear the tale of the Finnish hon tattoo and Alexi’s other inkings. Alexi experiences a foretaste of
the symptoms triggered by the previous chapter’s dramatic events. Passing his driving test guarantees freedom of movement, but also expands the opportunities to fulfill self-destructive and potentially lethal urges.
The sixth chapter, 86 where Alexi recounts the development of his sound as a guitarist and reveals how he got his first professional-level instrument. Getting to know one of the leading local figures in instrument import and retail bodes well for the fiiture of the group. Encounters with members ofSentenced, Amorphis and Stratovarius act as a collegial rite of passage and acceptance to the tribe. Another milestone is reached in the shape ofAlexi’s stint in the ranks of Impaled Nazarene. We learn that he is still under twenty when he embarks on his maiden voyages to Russia and Mexico as a musician. The seventh chapter, 100 during which Children of Bodom record their second album Hatebreeder and perform for the first time in Japan and the United States. Business partners in Europe crave more power metal in the mix, but the band is more than content to operate in the triangle of thrash, death and black metal of their own design. A leading character, Tonmi Lillman, comes into the picture as Alexi’s three-album-long tour of duty with Sinergy is reiterated. We also swim in unfathomably murky waters as Alexi’s mental health issues and his suicide attempt in Gothenburg come to light. The eighth chapter, 123 in which all the members of Children of Bodom turn professional, release their third album Follow the Reaper, and embark on their inaugural journey to Latin America. Shows in Korea are also played and the fourth album recorded. Generally regarded as the band’s best disc, Hate Crew Deathroll earns our heroes the first of three consecutive Number One spots in the Official Finnish
Album Chart. Alexi purchases a Dodge Monaco, inspired by one of his all-time favorite films, The Blues Brothers, and breaks some bones for the first time due to irrational drunken antics. -ffl֊
The ninth chapter, 139 where a good start in the US turns into a frustrating stalemate. COB’s first managers step into the fold: Gerald Wilkes starts handling affairs in Europe, while Paul Conroy assumes responsibilities for the New Continent. The group undergoes a notable line-up change as Alexander Kuoppala is replaced by Roope Latvala, best known for his tenure in Finnish speed metal pioneers Stone. In addition, Alexi invites us to hear his thoughts on endorsement deals. Which tragic events lead to co-operating with ESP Guitars and what is the most significant asset on his signature guitar? The tenth chapter, 156 during which the making of Are Той Dead Teti cements the still ongoing collaboration with Mikko Karmiła. Eläkeläiset (The Pensioners) get help with their version of “Hate Me! ”, and Alexi, Vesku Jokinen and Tonmi Lillman set up a side project apdy titled Kylähullut (The Village Idiots). The legendary Jens Johansson lives up to his reputation of being a class act and Alexi shares the cover of Guitar World magazine with Steve Vai and Zakk Wylde. Children of Bodom tour both sides of the Atlantic with Slayer alongside Mastodon and Lamb of God. Kristen Mulderig makes her entrance. The eleventh chapter, 178 which finds Alexi pondering the guitar hero myth and receiving a phone call from Dave Mustaine. As Alexi’s rock ’n’ roll lifestyle is beginning to attract attention in the domestic media, his relationship with intoxicants goes under scrutiny. Hundreds of miles pile up on the odometer on tours headlined by Megadeth and others. The recorded outcome of the period
consists of five offering Chaos Ridden Tears and the rabid sixth studio album Blooddrunk, recorded in a tranquil countryside setting. Aside from Children of Bodom chores, time is allotted to Sony BMG’s Guitar Heroes project. ֊XII֊
The twelfth chapter, 197 in which our self-confessed road dog ponders the meaning of home and close relationships. The family-like atmosphere of the band and the impact of the first-ever child bom to a member of COB is discussed at length. News of Tonini Lillman’s death sends shockwaves across the Atlantic. Somewhere in the US, the tour bus takes a sharp turn in the night, hurling a still-sleeping Alexi to the floor. Landing on his already injured shoulder leads to many years ofpain. The covers compilation Skeletons in the Closet is released and work on Relentless Reckless Forever begins. The thirteenth chapter, 221 wherein the band constructs professional recording facilities at their new rehearsal venue. The tight-knit production team utilizes Danger Johnny Studios to prepare Children of Bodom album number eight, Hah ofBlood. The band performs in India for the first time. The significance and value of devoted business partners like Nuclear Blast founder Markus Staiger is put under the microscope. In addition, Alexi looks at the practices typical of every artist operating more internationally than domestically. How big are the sacrifices one has to make when choosing this lifestyle? The FOURTEENTH CHAPTER 236 sees COB playing their biggest shows so fin as Metallica picks the band to open for them in Prague and Vienna. The biggest crisis in the group’s history abo plays out when Roope Latvala’s long-impending exit can no longer be avoided. Alexi and his good friend Jussi69 found The Local Band, a party crew specializing in 1980s Californian hard rock. The guitar hero takes
part in Michael “Starbuck” Majalahti’s show-wrestling event and looks at the bond between metal and ice hockey, where NHL stars like Jere Lehtinen and Tuukka Rask are well-known Children of Bodom fans. -«Ill-
The fifteenth chapter, 252 in which the Helsinki Festival makes Alexi an offer he can’t refiise, despite him already being pressed for time with Children of Bodom’s and The Local Band’s sessions. The hard work is rewarded as one hundred electric guitarists from all over the world gather in Senate Square in Helsinki to perform his grand opus. Steve Davis is chosen as the new manager of the band, the ninth album—I Worship Chaos—is recorded, tours are undertaken, and Daniel Freyberg joins COB. Alexi’s badly battered shoulder is rescued and repaired by an eminent orthopedist in Helsinki. The sixteenth chapter, 274 where we take a sneak peek at life after the active years. Going steady with Kelli Wright leads to an increasing amount of time spent in Australia. The power of loyalty and the importance of trust are evaluated as we get to know the reasons why Alexi, faska Raatikainen, Henkka Seppälä and Janne Wirman have stuck together for so long. As COB’s tenth album Hexed is prepared for release, it is fitting to take stock and look at the things that Alexi holds sacred. A childhood flashback brings back memories which reveal why Children ofBodom’s front man is so fascinated with edged weapons. Post Scriptum 285 Post Post Scriptum 287 Index 291 |
