Summary:This tutorial is the third in a series of three tutorials covering introductory, intermediate and advanced topics in cloud computing. This course provides an advanced treatment of the subject, focusing on the economics of cloud computing, or more precisely, helping organizations make a decision about whether to adopt cloud computing in one or more of its forms. The decision making process incorporates a comprehensive identification of risks and opportunities presented by cloud adoption. Quantitative methodology is utilized for comparing the costs of various forms of cloud computing to in-house computing alternatives.Dr. Laplante also reviews two IEEE-led cloud standards initiatives that will increase the interoperability potential of cloud-based systems and help reduce the risks and decrease the costs of cloud computing. And finally, he offers recommendations and best practices for successful cloud computing implementation. This course is substantially based on a publication prepared by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (or NIST): Draft Cloud Computing Synopsis and Recommendations, NIST SP 800-146, (Badger et al., 2012)
