Abstracts Ilia E. Pechenkin “Invention of the nation” within architecture of the Russian Empire and the early USSR The article considers a question of origins of the national movement in Rus sian architecture. In our opinion, “Russian style” is the most important phe nomena of modernization which depends on becoming of industrial society as well as on need to people mobilization during the wars. Based on the con structivist conception of nation-building (formed by E. Gellner, E. Hobsbawm and others), our view on the “Russian style” allows to notice some more semblance between the late Russian Empire and the early USSR. Despite the obvious difference in economic and political values, the cultural tendencies had likeness in the 1840s, 1910s and 1940s. Construction of the na tional style architecture is described as a parallel to “Invention of the nation” process that lasted in Russia at least one hundred years. Natalia O. Shashkova The railway architecture in prerevolutionary Russia: Idea of the progress vs. Power of tradition The article examines the theoretical and practical aspects of architecture and construction on the Russian railways in the context of modernization. It pays the utmost attention to the period of formation of the Russian railway transport that took place from the 1840s to the 1860s. The author has charac terized the role of railways in the economic, social and cul tural changes in the society, set the connection between the rationalistic ideas in the architectural theory and the engineering and architectural prac tice on the railways, and revealed
the progressive thoughts and design methods that were implemented in railway architecture in the second third of the 19th century transforming the architectural and constructional practice in the country due to the terrestrial expansion of the new transport. For the authors’ data see the next section. 184
Elena V. Gladkikh The construction and exploitation of the Naval pavilion at the Moscow Polytechnic Exhibition, 1870s-1880s The article is dedicated to one of the earlier cases of building with the use of steel parts. The Pavilion of the Naval Department was a temporary building created for the period of the Moscow Polytechnic Exhibition from May 30 to September 1, 1872. Then engineer and businessman Nikolai Putilov decided to demonstrate and popularize the frame system invented by him from used bent rails. The external decoration of the pavilion was made according to the drawings by the architect Ippolit Monighetti. After the end of the exhibition, the building of the Naval Department, which had an innovative structure from a steel-and-glass frame, was not dismantled. It had been assumed to use it for the needs of the newly established Polytechnic Museum at the Alexander Garden. This idea had been not implemented, and the building of the Naval Department was lost ca 1880. However, Putilov’s know-how served as a model for many railway and factory buildings later. Svetlana G. Babajan “Modernization of the memory”: Forming of discourse on the 18th century architectural heritage in post-reform Russia The article is devoted to the early manifestation of interest in the architec ture of Russian classicism among the architectural community of the 1890s on the eve of the appearance of the neoclassical trend in architecture. Tradi tionally, the neoclassical trends in architecture in the 1900s and 1910s is asso ciated with the influence of the “World of art” magazine, established
in 1898. However, at the Congress of architects in 1895, the architect Grigory Ko tov presented a report on the architectural heritage of the 18th century, which caused a great discussion and was evidence of independent interest of architects in the era of classicism without external non-architectural influ ences. The report for the first time raised some important issues in the study and protection of architecture of the 18th century. Yulia D. Starostenko In construction of “new” Moscow: From the plans of regulation in 1889—1901 toward the 1935 General Plan of reconstruction The article traces the origins and features of Russian urbanization based on a wide range of materials. The most recent of the “Great reforms” of Alex ander II - the urban reform of 1870 - acts in the article as a starting point 185
for the beginning of the modernization of Russian cities. Based on the material of the Soviet period, it can be seen how some previous ideas related to the de velopment and modernization of cities continued to be used to create new Mos cow, which became the capital of the country of the Soviets. In this regard, attention is focused on the problem of the ratio of the old and new in the city space, which was relevant for Moscow since the end of the 19th century, and remained so until the beginning of a new stage of reconstruction of the city in the early 1930s. Daria M. Kovaleva Russian structure engineering in the European context of the second half of the 19th century In this article, the development of structural engineering school in Russia is considered in a broader context of European modernization in the second half of the 19th century. The evolution process of two structural typologies arch rafter systems and spatial structures - is traced from individual engineer ing innovations of the 1840s through the wide use of the all-European struc tural typologies in the 1860s towards the development of new structural sys tems applied in the 1890s exclusively in Russian building practice. In this con text, the achievements of the Russian engineering school in the last decade of the 19th century are offered to consider as natural result of constant develop ment of engineering education, theory, and practice of construction in Russia during the whole 19th century. Xenia Yu. Grigorieva Reinforced concrete in the Russian Empire at the end of the 19th-beginning of the 20th
century: The genesis of new architectural aesthetics The article is focused on the earliest stage of the history of using concrete in architecture in Russia. At the end of the 19th century, the Russian Empire synchronized with the technological progress that captured Europe. Remforced concrete became one of the main discoveries of the century and by the beginning of the 20th century opened up new aesthetic opportunities for Rus sian craftsmen. Reinforced concrete helped engineers to anticipate the fu ture of architecture. This fact can be depicted by the overview of experi ence of introduction of concrete structures - first of all in industrial construc tion which came to birth of modem architectural aesthetics. 186
Polina E. Pokladok Moving with the times: The evolution of hospital construction in Moscow from the 1800s to the 1910s The article is devoted to the process of evolution of types of hospital archi tecture in Moscow in the 1800-1910s. This process seems to have begun too late, but in a hundred years, most of the entire path of transforming hospital buildings from its appearance to the present days has been covered. In this article, special attention is paid to the plans of buildings and hospital com plexes. One of the most important sources for this work was the reports of Russian architects on foreign trips, where they explored European hospitals and the history of their development. Russian architects of the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries described three systems of a hospital device: “corridor”, “pavilion” and “barracks”. In the 1880s, these systems began to mix, as a result of which, by the 1910s, optimal conditions were achieved for patients in side hospital buildings as well as outside. Olga S. Shurygina Russian automobile garages through the 1910s-1930s: From private boxes to corporative parking The article is devoted to extremely dynamic history of the development of automotive architecture in Russia in the first third of the 20th century. Me chanical transport (first a railway, then a car) has transformed people s ideas about time and space, changed the landscape and appearance of cities. Focus ing just on the structures for the car storage, the author depicts the stages of Russian garage evolution from private stables to public commercial parking lots
and further, under the influence of the social and economic realities of the socialist economy after 1917, to large departmental car spaces, the design busi ness of which was transferred to a special monopoly state office. The architec tural side of this designing was previously assigned a moderate role, but at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s many garage buildings received unique imaginative features. 187
