Beginning their story thousands of years before the Gauls and challenging the nationalist narrative of French history, Patrick Boucheron and his team of established and emerging historians present a notion of France as a place in flux, where ideas and peoples have crossed borders throughout the centuries. Starting with cave art at 34,000 BCE and ending with the shocking terror attacks of 2015, each chapter examines a significant year from a different angle, covering topics from Descartes to Dreyfus to the display of diversity in the 1998 World Cup winning team; pandemics of plague and cholera, which thrived on an increasingly interconnected world and laid bare the inequalities of French society; race, religion and revolution, class and elitism; and the role of women in the development of French thought, literature and business. This urgent, engaging, dynamic study will be required reading for all those with an interest in France and in new ways of approaching history.
