'Brexiť - leaving the European Union - was arguably the most fateful· decision in Britain's national· Life since 1939. The reasons and motives behind it are complex and controversial, but invoked a particular view of Britain's history, which Brexit was supposed to return the country to. That history, however, was not always well understood on either side of the argument, as neither was the relevance it might have to present-day events. This col·lection of essays - some old. some new - addresses several· aspects of that history in depth. These range from Britain's multicultural· origins as a nation, through its people's travets on ‘the continent', their reactions to political refugees and European-origin terrorism, their rebtionship with European 'high cuÍture'. their experiences of the two ‘total· wars' of the 20th century, through to the crucial 1950s and the counter-revolution associated with Margaret Thatcher. The book continues with a discussion of how much of this can be believed in view of Britain's traditions of ‘secrecy' in the recent past: and ends with an examination of what, in the light of all this. ‘Brexit’ really means and how it was achieved. Each chapter comprises a separate study, based on primary sources and informed by new approaches. The result is a highly engaging and personal anaÎysis of some of the historical factors which bear on the question of Britain's ‘national identity', and on its former relations with Europe. |
