DEATH REGISTER OF THE PARISH FOJNICA 1750 - 1821 Life with a cross in the shadow of the crescent Summary Fojnica, a town in the central Bosnia, is a part of wider area in which ore was exploited in the Roman province Dalmatia. In the 14th and 15th ct. it was one of the mining and economic centers of Bosnian Banate and later of Bosnian Kingdom. It was the largest settlement in the region òf „Kings land“ that was conquered in 1463 by the Ottomans. Despite the losses, the indigenous people who were not killed, exiled, or taken to captivity, thanks to the mining benefits or the fact that this was the bordering line to the unconquered teritory of the Hungarian-Croatian king, were still in majority in the mining areas. With the Ottoman conquest the process of islamisation began, that was mild in the beginning. After the fall of the Banate of Srebrenica in 1512 and the Banate of Jajce in 1528 we have the influx of Vlach Ortodox inhabitants too. In the first half ofthe 16th ct., when the borders were being moved towards the West, the Ottomans changed the methods of strategic oriental urbanisation and islamisation ֊ they introduced the force. At that time the st. Mary’s church in Fojnica was distroyed. The Franciscans had to seek for the permission to build another church and monastery at the nearby hill Križ (Cross). In the mining centers as „Catholic oases“ the confessional structure of the people started to change gradually, although the Catholics still made up the majority of the inhabitants in the 17th ct. in Fojnica and the surroundings. In the middle of the 17th ct. the
islamisation in Fojnica was being supported by systematic actions of the state and confessional servants. In the area that is nowadays Bosnia and Herzegovina, before the Ottoman conquest there was almost 500 Catholic churches as known up till today. After the War of Vienna only 5 of them were left. Three of them were the ones belonging to the monasteries in Fojnica, Kreševo and Sutiska. In the large area of the most Western Ottoman province the number of the Catholics was minimized. The remaining Catholics were in the 18. ct. dispersed in only 30 parishes, in three districts of the three abovementioned Franciscan monasteries. One of them, the parish of Fojnica, encompassed the area in central Bosnia, west to the river Bosna, that was 5 hours of walking wide and long. The majority of the preserved death registers stemms from the middle of the 18th ct. The oldest preserved death register in the Franciscan Monastery of Holly Spirit in Fojnica is „Death register 1750 - 1821“. This register, named „The Protocol“, and later called „The Records of the Dead“, has in its contents notes about the circumstances and the cause of the death. This is how it enriches the parts of the puzzle that depict the life in the Roman-Catholic parish Fojnica in the 18th and 19 th ct. On one hand, it depicts the spiritual life of the parishers, the life of the parish community and the spiritual guidance by the Franciscans. On the other hand, it depicts the cruel reality of the social relations. 4 Although there was a change in Europe during the seven decades that the register refers to, in the form of
the process of modernisation, national integration and bourgeois affirmation, in Turkish Bosnia the situation did not change. The content of the Register depicts social relations that enabled the janizaries to commit unpunished murders, murders with no reason. The sentence to the people who were very often innocent, because of an assault on or a murder of a Muslim, was brutal. 48 Anto Ivić enforcing the law in the form of severe physical punishments and death sentences had a function to keep the Catholic population constantly obedient. „Death Register“ and „Death register of the Little Brothers“ witness about burying the dead in the tombs inside the church. Such practice ceased for the congregation with the beginning of the so called big plaque that started in 1814, and half a century later this practice ceased also for the monks. Obituaries and additional notes witness about an exemplary religious life of the many who deserved a place in the church and to be buried in the monastic habit of st. Francis. In addition to the information about numerous tombs that were all around in the church floor, this is also a source of knowledge about the interior of the church. The interior, with many altars, and as opposed to the humble exterior, was a sign that the church and the monastery were the spiritual center of high importance. The existence of the graveyard is closely connected to the history of the church and Franciscan monastery of the Holy Spirit in Fojnica. The enclosed text gives us also some ideas about its layout. It is a source from which we find out about the other graveyards in the large parish, from the lower part of the Lašva Valley to Sebišće in the vicinity of Novi Travnik. The largest part can be ubicated. Some of these graveyards came into existence during the infectious epidemic, but many of them were old Christian graveyards, as recorded. Some of these centuries old graveyards confirm the existence of churches at these places in the
pre-Ottoman period. The analysis of the demographic losses is based on the indicators of the consequences of the last so called the great plaque that was present in the parish Fojnica as well as in the other regions from 1814 till 1817. That was the largest demographic breakdown in the 19th ct. At that time in the Roman-Catholic parish Fojnica more than a third of the Catholics passed away as a result of this epidemic. The registers of the parish Fojnica are a part of historical documents that confirm Croatian Cyrillic literacy. The oldest epigraphic traces of the Croatian Cyrillic alphabet, one of the three Croatian scripts, can be found in the region among Bosnia, Adriatic Sea and Istria. The franciscans of the Franciscan province Bosna Srebrena (Bosna Argentina), the bearers of literature, culture and spirituality, prolongued its existence, especially in the registers, up till the 19th ct. In the second part of that century it was the Franciscan writers who gave it the name „bosanica“, and at the end of the century it got the name „bosančica“ too. Next to the transcript of the Death Register, the methodology used for the interpretation of the text of the Register, that was originally written in Croatian Cyrillics and Latin script, in Croatian and Latin language, is explained. Names are shown, in the registers also the surnames, their other versions and alternate surnames (alias), that were found on the pages of the Death Register of the parish Fojnica 1750 - 1821. DEATH REGISTER OF THE PARISH FOJNICA 1750 - 1821 Life with a cross in the shadow of the crescent Summary Fojnica, a town in the central Bosnia, is a part of wider area in which ore was exploited in the Roman province Dalmatia. In the 14th and 15th ct. it was one of the mining and economic centers of Bosnian Banate and later of Bosnian Kingdom. It was the largest settlement in the region òf „Kings land“ that was conquered in 1463 by the Ottomans. Despite the losses, the indigenous people who were not killed, exiled, or taken to captivity, thanks to the mining benefits or the fact that this was the bordering line to the unconquered teritory of the Hungarian-Croatian king, were still in majority in the mining areas. With the Ottoman conquest the process of islamisation began, that was mild in the beginning. After the fall of the Banate of Srebrenica in 1512 and the Banate of Jajce in 1528 we have the influx of Vlach Ortodox inhabitants too. In the first half ofthe 16th ct., when the borders were being moved towards the West, the Ottomans changed the methods of strategic oriental urbanisation and islamisation ֊ they introduced the force. At that time the st. Mary’s church in Fojnica was distroyed. The Franciscans had to seek for the permission to build another church and monastery at the nearby hill Križ (Cross). In the mining centers as „Catholic oases“ the confessional structure of the people started to change gradually, although the Catholics still made up the majority of the inhabitants in the 17th ct. in Fojnica and the surroundings. In the middle of the 17th ct. the
islamisation in Fojnica was being supported by systematic actions of the state and confessional servants. In the area that is nowadays Bosnia and Herzegovina, before the Ottoman conquest there was almost 500 Catholic churches as known up till today. After the War of Vienna only 5 of them were left. Three of them were the ones belonging to the monasteries in Fojnica, Kreševo and Sutiska. In the large area of the most Western Ottoman province the number of the Catholics was minimized. The remaining Catholics were in the 18. ct. dispersed in only 30 parishes, in three districts of the three abovementioned Franciscan monasteries. One of them, the parish of Fojnica, encompassed the area in central Bosnia, west to the river Bosna, that was 5 hours of walking wide and long. The majority of the preserved death registers stemms from the middle of the 18th ct. The oldest preserved death register in the Franciscan Monastery of Holly Spirit in Fojnica is „Death register 1750 - 1821“. This register, named „The Protocol“, and later called „The Records of the Dead“, has in its contents notes about the circumstances and the cause of the death. This is how it enriches the parts of the puzzle that depict the life in the Roman-Catholic parish Fojnica in the 18th and 19 th ct. On one hand, it depicts the spiritual life of the parishers, the life of the parish community and the spiritual guidance by the Franciscans. On the other hand, it depicts the cruel reality of the social relations. 4 Although there was a change in Europe during the seven decades that the register refers to, in the form of
the process of modernisation, national integration and bourgeois affirmation, in Turkish Bosnia the situation did not change. The content of the Register depicts social relations that enabled the janizaries to commit unpunished murders, murders with no reason.
