Zusammenfassung: | "The first full-length study of prison life writing, this book shows how the autobiographical literature of incarcerated people is consistently based on a conversion narrative, the same narrative that underpins prison rehabilitation. By demonstrating how prison life writing interlocks with institutional power, the book challenges conventional preconceptions about writing behind bars. And yet, imprisoned people often use the conversion narrative like they repurpose other objects in prison: much like the radio motor retooled into a tattoo gun, the conversion narrative is often redefined to serve subversive purposes like questioning the supposed emancipatory role of prison writing, critiquing white supremacy, and reconfiguring what can be said in autobiographical discourse. An interdisciplinary work that brings life writing scholarship into conversation with prison studies and law and literature studies, Prison Life Writing theorizes how life writing works in prison, explains literature’s complicated entanglements with institutional power, and demonstrates the political and aesthetic innovations of one of America’s most controversial literary genres."-- |

РШОН Uf E WRITING IS THE FIRST FULL-LENGTH STUDY of one of the most controversial genres in American literature. By exploring the complicated relationship between life writing and institutional power, this book reveals the overlooked aesthetic innovations of incarcerated people and the surprising literary roots of the U.S. prison system. Simon Rolston observes that the autobiographical work of incarcerated people is based on a conversion narrative, a story arc that underpins the concept of prison rehabilitation and that sometimes serves the interests of the prison system, rather than those on the inside. Yet many imprisoned people rework the conversion narrative the way they repurpose other objects in prison. Like a radio motor retooled into a tattoo gun, the conversion nar rative has been redefined by some authors for subversive purposes, including questioning the ostensible emancipatory role of prison writing, critiquing white supremacy, and broadly reimagining autobiographical discourse. An interdisciplinary work that brings life writing scholarship into conversation with prison studies and law and literature studies, Prison Life Writing theorizes how life writing works in prison, explains literature’s complicated entanglements with institutional power, and demonstrates the political and aesthetic innovations of one of America’s most fascinating literary genres.

An interdisciplinary work that brings life writing scholarship into conversation with prison studies and law and literature studies, Prison Life Writing theorizes how life writing works in prison, explains literature’s complicated entanglements with institutional power, and demonstrates the political and aesthetic innovations of one of America’s most controversial literary genres."-- Gefangenenliteratur (DE-588)4238120-4 gnd rswk-swf Autobiografie (DE-588)4003939-0 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Prisoners' writings, American / History and criticism Prisoners / United States / Biography / History and criticism Prisoners in literature Prisons in literature Conversion in literature Prisons / United States Prisoners / Biography Prisoners' writings, American Prisons United States Criticism, interpretation, etc USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Gefangenenliteratur (DE-588)4238120-4 s Autobiografie (DE-588)4003939-0 s DE-604 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, EPUB 978-1-77112-518-5 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, PDF 978-1-77112-519-2 V:DE-576;B:DE-21 application/pdf https://swbplus.bsz-bw.de/bsz1753275679inh.htm 20211001193647 Inhaltsverzeichnis V:DE-576;B:DE-21 application/pdf https://swbplus.bsz-bw.de/bsz1753275679kla.htm 20211001193647 Klappentext Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=032822707&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=032822707&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Klappentext |
