Zusammenfassung: | In Putin's Labor Dilemma, Stephen Crowley investigates how the fear of labor protest has inhibited substantial economic transformation in Russia. Putin boasts he has the backing of workers in the country's industrial heartland, but as economic growth slows in Russia, reviving the economy will require restructuring the country's industrial landscape. At the same time, doing so threatens to generate protest and instability from a key regime constituency. However, continuing to prop up Russia's Soviet-era workplaces, writes Crowley, could lead to declining wages and economic stagnation, threatening protest and instability. Crowley explores the dynamics of a Russian labor market that generally avoids mass unemployment, the potentially explosive role of Russia's monotowns, conflicts generated by massive downsizing in "Russia's Detroit" (Tol'yatti), and the rapid politicization of the truck drivers movement. Labor protests currently show little sign of threatening Putin's hold on power, but the manner in which they are being conducted point to substantial chronic problems that will be difficult to resolve. Putin's Labor Dilemma demonstrates that the Russian economy must either find new sources of economic growth or face stagnation. Either scenario-market reforms or economic stagnation-raises the possibility, even probability, of destabilizing social unrest |

Jul 2021) War zeitweise Open Access bei De Gruyter 1.7.2022 In Putin's Labor Dilemma, Stephen Crowley investigates how the fear of labor protest has inhibited substantial economic transformation in Russia. Either scenario-market reforms or economic stagnation-raises the possibility, even probability, of destabilizing social unrest Labor History Political Science & Political History Soviet & East European History LAW / Labor & Employment bisacsh Business and politics Russia (Federation) Economic stabilization Russia (Federation) Industrial policy Russia (Federation) Industrial relations Political aspects Russia (Federation) Political stability Russia (Federation) Social stability Russia (Federation) Working class Russia (Federation) Stabilität (DE-588)4056693-6 gnd rswk-swf Industriepolitik (DE-588)4026860-3 gnd rswk-swf Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 gnd rswk-swf Arbeitnehmer (DE-588)4002623-1 gnd rswk-swf Arbeitsmarkt (DE-588)4002733-8 gnd rswk-swf Arbeitsproduktivität (DE-588)4002766-1 gnd rswk-swf Berufstätigkeit (DE-588)4069349-1 gnd rswk-swf Russland (DE-588)4076899-5 gnd rswk-swf Russland (DE-588)4076899-5 g Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 s Arbeitnehmer (DE-588)4002623-1 s Arbeitsmarkt (DE-588)4002733-8 s Arbeitsproduktivität (DE-588)4002766-1 s Berufstätigkeit (DE-588)4069349-1 s Industriepolitik (DE-588)4026860-3 s Stabilität (DE-588)4056693-6 s DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 9781501756276 Crowley, Stephen, 1960- Putin's labor dilemma Ithaca [New York] : ILR Press, an imprint of Cornell University Press, 2021 https://doi.org/10.1515/9781501756306 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
