Summary The book is devoted to one of the most difficult topics: the origin of the Alans and Ass. The author considers the issues of the origin of the Alans and pays much attention to the theory of the Scythian origin of the Alans and the ethnic history of the Scythians themselves. Issues of culture and language of Scythians, Sarmatians, and Alans are considered in detail. The data on the Scythian language confirms that the Scythian na tion had at least several ethnic elements including Turkic tribes among them. The genetic connection between the culture of the Scythians, Sarmatians and Alans and the culture of modem Turkic peoples is traced. The author critically examines the works of V. Miller and V. Abaev, which are already outdated and were wrong. The author analyzes data on the language of Alans and Ass and comes to the conclu sion about an essential Tiirkic element in the ethnogenesis of Alans and Ass. Many interesting and new sources about the Huns and their influence in the North Caucasus are cited. The author puts forward a version of the ethnic connection between the Huns and Alans, rejecting the ethnic connection between the European Huns and the Central Asian Xiong-nu. In particular, written and archaeological sources about the artificial deformation of head among the Sarmatians, Alans and Huns are cited in de tail. The author also summarizes the data of DNA tests of remains from Scythian, Sarmatian and Alanian burials, which prove a significant genetic connection of these peo ples with modem Turkic peoples (Karachai-Balkars, Tatars, Bashkirs, Kirghiz,
Nogais, etc.) and the absence of such a connection with modem Ossetians. A large chapter is devoted to the study of the heroic epic sagas “Narts”, especially its most developed Karachay-Balkarian version. In this version of the Nart sagas, the myths have been preserved that are clearly associated with the era of Alan mie in the Caucasus. In particular, the ethnic name of Alans and Ass were preserved in the Karachay-Balkarian sagas, in contrast to the Ossetian and Adyge sagas where it is absent. Also, the Karachai-Balkarian Nart sagas are very developed and rich than any other versions of the Nart sagas. In particular, the equestrian culture and the role of the horse in the life of the heroes is the most striking in this version of the epic sagas. According to the author it originates from the Scythians and Alans. The author cites many myths from Scythian mythology that have survived today only among the Karachay-Balkars or other Turkic peoples. The author’s research on the Alan heritage in the everyday culture of the KarachayBalkars is interesting also. Karachay-Balkarians still call each other “Alan”, and the address to each other “Alan!” is widely used in the literature and poetry of the Kara chay-Balkarian writers and poets. The author gives very interesting examples of this fact from the Karachay-Balkarian literature of the 30-50s of XXth century. 348
