Zusammenfassung: | The Codex epistolaris Carolinus preserves ninety-nine letters, dated between 739 and 791 and sent by the popes to the Frankish king Charlemagne and his predecessors. The compilation was commissioned by Charlemagne in 791, but the sole surviving medieval manuscript of the letters was made at Cologne in the later ninth century and is now in Vienna (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek Cod. 449). The headings or lemmata provided for each letter by the Frankish compilers in 791 and faithfully preserved in the codex, add a distinctive Frankish commentary on events in Rome and Italy in the second half of the eighth century. This book not only provides the first full English translation of the letters and lemmata in the Codex epistolaris Carolinus but also re-creates the original Carolingian order of presentation of the letters according to the manuscript. A substantial introduction discusses the historical significance of the collection, the compilation and contexts of the Vienna manuscript, especially the significance of the lemmata, the peculiarities of the Latin of the papal letters and the biblical citations, and the historical context of the letters themselves. The lemmata and letter translations are augmented with introductions to each letter and a comprehensive historical commentary and glossary |

The lemmata and letter translations are augmented with introductions to each letter and a comprehensive historical commentary and glossary Translated from the Latin Karolinger Dynastie : 500-1085 (DE-588)118721003 gnd rswk-swf Codex epistolaris Carolinus (DE-588)4805273-5 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 739-791 gnd rswk-swf Papst (DE-588)4044561-6 gnd rswk-swf Briefsammlung (DE-588)4146609-3 gnd rswk-swf Charlemagne / Emperor / 742-814 Charles Martel / approximately 688-741 Pepin / King of the Franks / -768 Carolingians / History / Sources Popes / Correspondence Church history / Middle Ages, 600-1500 / Sources Church and state / France / History / To 1500 Papacy / History / To 1309 / Sources Manuscripts, Latin (Medieval and modern) / Austria / Vienna Franks / History / 768-814 / Sources France / History / To 987 / Sources Carolingians Church and state Church history / Middle Ages / Sources Popes France To 1500 History Personal correspondence Sources Chirographa (Personal correspondence) (DE-588)4135952-5 Quelle gnd-content Mittellateinische Literatur (DE-2581)TH000005179 gbd Franken (DE-2581)TH000005000 gbd Brief (DE-2581)TH000005045 gbd Karolinger Dynastie : 500-1085 (DE-588)118721003 p Papst (DE-588)4044561-6 s Briefsammlung (DE-588)4146609-3 s Geschichte 739-791 z DE-604 Codex epistolaris Carolinus (DE-588)4805273-5 u McKitterick, Rosamond 1949- (DE-588)129701327 trl Espolo, Dorine van 1981- (DE-588)1284203891 trl Pollard, Richard Matthew (DE-588)1076928544 trl Price, Richard 1947- (DE-588)129694673 trl Translated texts for historians 77 (DE-604)BV035131501 77 Digitalisierung BSB München - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=032753184&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=032753184&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Klappentext |
