SELECT BIBLIOGRAPHY The following books are important or have been useful in writing this book, or both. The selection is weighted towards the English language. Where a short form is used in the footnotes, this is given in parentheses on first use, e.g. Benaki Museum, Venizelos Archive (Benaki), and thereafter simply Benaki. ARCHIVAL SOURCES The Benaki Museum Venizelos Archive is the indispensable archive for Venizelos’s life and career. The originals can be read in the Benaki Archive at the former Delta house in Kifissia (38 Emm. Benaki St. Delta Street, 14561 Kifissia). The archive has been digitised and is published by the Benaki Museum and by the E. K. Venizelos National Research Foundation, Chania, for which see below. The Benaki Archive also includes the Klearchos Markantonakis Archive, and those of many other prominent figures of the period. The Chania Municipal Library holds a library of Venizelos’s books, which were sent to Chania after his death and are held in a large room there. They throw light on his reading, his approach to political history, and his interest in foreign languages. The library also contains some of his legal briefs. The E. K. Venizelos National Research Foundation, Elena Venizelou Square, Halepa, Chania 73133, Crete, across the road from the Venizelos house, is now a museum and has a collection of books, images and archival sources. It has published important books on aspects of Venizelos’s career and related subjects including the essential two volume biography ofVenizelos, in Greek, by the Director of the Archive, Nikolaos Emm. Papadakis. It
has digitised the contents of the Benaki Museum Venizelos Archive and 489
