The eleven chapters that make up the volume are authored by an interdisciplinary team of scholars (including four top specialists in the field, Cornelia Isler-Kerényi, Richard Seaford, Richard Stoneman and Jean-Marie Pailler) and cover the period from archaic Greece to the late Roman empire. The reader can therefore observe how the political ideas and motifs rooted in Greek classical thought were continued, adapted, and developed in successive periods of history. The contributors reconstruct the political significance of Dionysus by examining different kinds of evidence: historiography, poetry, coins, epigraphy, art, and philosophy. They discuss the place of the god in the politics of Greek city-states, explore the long tradition of imitating Dionysus that ancient leaders, from Alexander the Great to the Roman emperors, manifested in various ways, as well as demonstrate how the political role of Dionysus was reflected in Orphism and Neoplatonist philosophy. Dionysus and Politics provides an excellent introduction to a fundamental feature of ancient political thought which until now has been largely neglected by mainstream academia. The book will be an invaluable resource to students and scholars interested in ancient politics and religion"-- |

The book will be an invaluable resource to students and scholars interested in ancient politics and religion"--</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Dionysos</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)118679759</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geschichte</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politisches Denken</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4115590-7</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Römisches Reich</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4076778-4</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Griechenland</subfield><subfield code="g">Altertum</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4093976-5</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="1"><subfield code="a">Dionysus / (Greek deity)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Religion and politics / Greece / History / To 1500</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Religion and politics / Rome / History</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Political science / Greece / Philosophy</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Political science / Rome / Philosophy</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Rome / Politics and government / 30 B.C.-476 A.D</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Greece / Politics and government / To 146 B.C</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4143413-4</subfield><subfield code="a">Aufsatzsammlung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd-content</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="688" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Religion der Römer</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-2581)TH000006555</subfield><subfield code="2">gbd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="688" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Kulturgeschichte der Antike</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-2581)TH000005829</subfield><subfield code="2">gbd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="688" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Dionysos (Religion der Griechen)</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-2581)TH000006513</subfield><subfield code="2">gbd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="688" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Religion der Griechen</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-2581)TH000006500</subfield><subfield code="2">gbd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Dionysos</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)118679759</subfield><subfield code="D">p</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="1"><subfield code="a">Griechenland</subfield><subfield code="g">Altertum</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4093976-5</subfield><subfield code="D">g</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Römisches Reich</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4076778-4</subfield><subfield code="D">g</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="3"><subfield code="a">Politisches Denken</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4115590-7</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Geschichte</subfield><subfield code="A">z</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="5">DE-604</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Doroszewski, Filip</subfield><subfield code="d">1980-</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)121930543X</subfield><subfield code="4">edt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Karłowicz, Dariusz</subfield><subfield code="d">1964-</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)1099708508</subfield><subfield code="4">edt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="z">9781003050995</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Erscheint auch als</subfield><subfield code="n">Online-Ausgabe</subfield><subfield code="t">Dionysus and politics</subfield><subfield code="d">Abingdon, Oxon ; The eleven chapters that make up the volume are authored by an interdisciplinary team of scholars (including four top specialists in the field, Cornelia Isler-Kerényi, Richard Seaford, Richard Stoneman and Jean-Marie Pailler) and cover the period from archaic Greece to the late Roman empire.
