This timely book explores the growth of live literature in the digitalizing 21st century. Why have literary performance events become so popular? How do they affect literary culture, and transform the ways in which fiction is received, valued, and even written? in answering those questions, Wiles delves into the experience of a major literary festival and an intimate LGBTQ+ salon. Immersive scenes are intercut with snappy analysis and entertaining conversations with well-known author-performers and reader-audiences, producers, critics, and booksellers. Wiles s experiential literary ethnography makes an innovative and engaging contribution to research on audience experience and cultural value across art forms.
