A SUMMARY Hafìz Ali Korça - his life and work Hafiz Ali Korça, with his political, patriotic, enlighten ment, and cultural activities in general, but in particu lar due to his very rich literary, journalistic, islamologic, translated, pedagogic, and textologic works, deserves a special study in macrostructure aspect for two particular reasons: first of all, he was an Islam intellectual with a very clear cultural and patriotic consciousness who left a very voluminous and interesting work, especially in the field of Albanian islamology; then, because he is a rare and the only intellectual who remained during all the time quite per sistent in his national principles and who waged her battle in Albania against her enemies and adversaries. Unfortu nately, he is also the only creative writer of the last phase of Albanian National Renaissance and of Albanian Literature between the two wars, whose work has been unjustly and paradoxically banned, anathematized and ignored by our researchers, not only during Communist dictatorship, but also between the two wars. One of the important issues that should be mentioned in this case is the realization and the actualization of demands and aspirations of Albanian National Renaissance. Many Albanians of this age have contributed to the programme and ideological platform of the Renaissance; some of them succeeded to infiltrate primary books with Albanian alphabet in sacks of goods, the others managed to open a school in Albanian, and some of Albanian Revival activists even removed and expelled rulers representatives. Each
M M í I l А И X f O I I í f í il I of them contributed to Albanian national awakening and cause according to his capacities and possibilities, endan gering his own life for the national ideal. Çajupi very well pointed out that “each of them put a small stone in the building of our nation”. I would not like to consider the contribution of our Renaissance activists in scale, preferring those who stood higher than the others on the stair, but I am rather inclined to treat them on a horizontal level, where there are concentric circles around a core. In this way I would appreciate more those who stand closer to the core, accor ding to their contribution to national altar. In this sense, I think that significant literary works are “Songs of Milosao”, “Flowers of Summer”, “Qerbelaja”, but to our culture I should include also “Seven Dreams of Albania”, “Jusuf and Zeliha” by Hafiz Ali Korça, then “Thoughts” by Rexhep Voka, or “Religious Confessions” by Haxhi Voka, etc. I am aware that the first school of Korça is important, but Mati Logoreci’s school and Haxhi Vokas school are important as well; I am convinced that the Congress of Manastır is significant, but I believe that the implementation of deci sions of the Congress of Dibra by Hafiz Ali Korça is also significant. His life, his political, educational nd pedagogic view points, which were pointed in this monograph, are results of political, social and creative developments of that age on the one hand, and on the other, they are testimonies of demands and aspirations of Albanian people, whose natio nal conscious-ness was
deepening more and more. At the same time, his viewpoints are the natural consequence and results of Albanian national movement of the middle 19th century, which took larger proportions in ‘20-30 of this
tilli ill КІМ I E r i SHE (İPSİ century, because Hafiz Ali Korça’s consciousness, as a pat riot, enlightenment activist, well known islamologist, had its roots in his own people and in his knowledge of real Albanian life. His life and his conceptions were shaped also by general warring atmosphere that dominated in Ballkans of that time. Our writer and late Renaissance represen tative, grew up in this struggle, in which he participated actively and became one of its outstanding figures. The glory of his personality does not consist only in his participation to this struggle, but because he knew how to get messages, he also knew how to distinguish the danger that was threatening our people. He was aware that our people was threatened both by foreign invaders as well as by domestic rulers, against whom he reacted vigorously, taking off their masks and unmasking their hostile and demonie intentions. Hafiz Ali Korça started his patriotic and creative acti vities in the period of organized efforts of Albanians for national independence. He started his patriotic efforts in Korça, that at that time, was an important economic and cultural centre. He was intellectually and spiritually trained in order to become a combatant of Albanian inde pendence. Hafiz Ali Korça very early fegun his collabora tion with veterans of Albanian Renaissance, such as Mihail Grameno, Luigj Gurakuqi, Sami Pojani, Lutfi Zavalani, Gjergj Fishta, Abdyl Ypi, etc. Stimulated and instigated by patriotic motives, he collaborated with Albanian maga zines, “Korça” and with some other magazines abroad, such as
“Sabah”, “Sirati Mustekin”, “Aksham”, “Es-Si-jasetu” and “E-Hal-Laxh”. He published his first social, political and national articles and essays in these magazines.
i s к i i i t i « : d ւ virst ւ Hafiz Ali Korça was a teacher at the Secondary School of Korça. Although he was specialized in the field of islamistics and oriental philology, beside philological subjects, he would teach also some other subjects of exact science: mathematics, geometry, astronomy, etc. It is necessary to point out that Hafiz Ali Korça with deep pain experienced the troubles and problems of Albania during Balkan Wars and the First War. All the same, he never stopped his patriotic activities. He expe rienced with a bitter indignation the government of Prince Wied, on whom, like so many other Albanian activists, he layed expectations and hopes as the leader, who conld sett le internal problems of Albania. During the years 1918-24, Hafiz Ali Korça was a pre sident of the Supreme Shariat Council in Tirana. As the President of this Council, he undertook important measures and activities. First, he opened a “Medrese” (Secondary Religious School), and then he became its first teacher. Afterwards, he insisted in implementation of modern programmes and curricula in all religious schools (medreses) of Albania. He was the compiler of those new curricula. This was the way, according to him, of the trans formation of Albanian education. Likewise, he wrote a serial of handbooks for Albanian schools. However, after the publication of his work “Seven Dreams of Albania” in 1924, he was dismissed not only from his fimction as the President of Supreme Shariat Council, but also from all other activities in Islam education in Albania. It is obvious that he was a victim of
anti-national forces. Nevertheless, he continued to serve his motherland with the same vigour and enthusiasm. He spent the last part of his life in Tirana and Kavajë. The last years of his life were
g i м i ։ i i к о к ( i tiik g и i v í p g і years of misery, as he was doomed to live in poverty and oblivion. These circumstances remind us an old historical experience, according to which: “The rulers very often vio late without mercy, corpses of combatants who have traced out the route of their triumph”. Hafiz Ali Korça is one of the rare creative writers of our literature, who during his life had to cope and to over come various troubles, blows, ups and downs, difficul ties and obstacles, afthough he has never succumbed but resisted and struggled for his ideals. He has never been disappointed or disillusioned. He passed through three terrible historical periods: the period of Turkish rule, the period of political struggle inside Albania between two wars, and the period of Communist slavery. And, rather ironically, he has challenged all these periods without hesi tation, fear and despair. This is the way how this figure was forged as the creative writer, combatant, ideologist of patriotism, visionary, an enlightenment, national and reli gious activist, a brave man, who fought for belief, but who never forgot his duty to his motherland. Thanks to this study, both the biography and activities of this outstanding representative of late Renaissance, once ignored and marginalized, he emerges now in front of us, with his chastity, principles and ideals, which enabled us to research the main points of his statics; first his vigorous and consistent struggle for establishment of Albanian religious and public schools; for Albanian school-books, both public and religious; for
Albanian alphabet with Latin letters until 1912; the seeond: his struggle and efforts aimed at inter nal stability of Albania, when Albania was endangered by deceitful ideology of Bolshevism in 1920-25; third: his illu sions about the Second World War and the period after it, I 307
i s i å i ւ i i i ւ i i ТЕГНИ I when all national and democratic ideals of Hafiz Ali Korça as well as of a lot of other Albanian intellectuals and crea tive writers were buried by the installment of Communist dictatorship after 1944. Hafiz Ali Korça’s literary activities, according to their topics and subjects may be divided into two parts: the first part includes works dealing with themes and subjects of patriotism, national awakening and national freedom and independence, including his masterpiece “The Seven Dreams of Albania”, while to the second part belong all his other contributions in certain time and space. In his collection of poems “The Seven Dreams of Al bania” Hafiz Ali Korça expresses clearly, his ideological standpoint of national movement, seen by him as a uni fication of revolutionary and democratic forces; his trust in leaders with a sound patriotic and religious moral, who would deserve to ensure the right and fair leadership to Albania. In this collection of poems, he articulates his aspi rations and makes diagnosis of real politics that could be evaluated as the best estimations in Albanian poetry in the first 23 years of twentieth century. Besides historical wounds, he discovers in his collection some other political wounds, for which he often tries to anticipate and find out remedies for their healing. Islam subjects and topics in Hafiz All’s works make the most volumi-nous and the most interesting part ofhis crea tive activities. This Albanian author in Albanian literature of Islam influence has treated almost the same topics and subjects and
themes that had been treated by well-known world poets: Firdussi and El Jami in Persian literature, Ibn Farid and El Bussiri in Arabic literature and Suleiman Çelebi among Turks. Apart from the subject of Jusufi and
11(11 111 1111(1 I i ī 1 і N E lirit Zeliha and Mevlude, Hafiz Ali succeeded to create in Albanian literature of Islam influence, the Albanian epic entitled “The Holy History and the Four Khalifets”. In this work, the author has accumulated all his knowledge, inclu ding the history of Kur’an in order to create an original and genuine work of Islam history. This work is a rare treasure. The collection of poems “The Holy History and the Four Khalifets” reflects the real value of conceptions and right Islam thoughts of basic principles of Islam religion. Oriental literatures, particularly Arab and Persian lite ratures, had influenced very much the poetic work of Hafiz Ali. His poetic taste was moulded under the influence of these literatures. Thanks to his reading of original literary and artistic works of Arabic and Persian literatures, he was able to get acquainted with the literatures of both past and modern periods. The result of the influence of Arabic and Persian lite ratures on the creation of Hafiz Ah is the use of distich, rhyme and quatrains, which are the characteristics of Oriental literature. His poetry is overwhelmed by a high degree of feelings, inspirations and polemics. Hafiz Ah Korça’s style usually uses various metaphors, symbols and comparisons, he creates artistic nuances of emotions and thoughts. He uses metaphors, images and figures mainly in the poems of the first part of his collec tion “The Seven Dreams of Albania”, when his artistic and creative experience was more powerful while he was able to notice the adequate internal forms of his
inspiration. The transformations of his expression in his symbols show how much he was eager to generalize the meaning of his poetry. His poetry was also distinguished by its varieties of verses and stanzas, among which he managed to use successfully
*41 Μ Я ¡I 1 I ilişil If S I I i I octosyllabic verse, decasyllabic verse, twelve syllable and sixteen syllable verses. Three kinds of these verses are the characteristics of Albanian folk verses. So far historical, literary, critical and islamologic stu dies have not been dedicated at all to this personality, the refore his life and work were unknown to our readers. Just because of this reason, macrostudies on this writer were very much needed in order to elucidate his life and work that are not only tightly connected with his historical, so cial and political progress of Albania, but also with the development of educational system and Islam religious culture among Albanians. Hafiz Ali Korça։ s work gives us an opportunity to approach and study his works from many aspects and standpoints. Finally, Hafiz Ali Korça and his work are two insepa rable organic parts of his fame. There are no gaps between them. Hafiz Ali Korça is ranked among those combatants writers and islamologists of Albanian Renaissance, whose life and work may open new paths in national, cultural and religious progress. |

A SUMMARY Hafìz Ali Korça - his life and work Hafiz Ali Korça, with his political, patriotic, enlighten ment, and cultural activities in general, but in particu lar due to his very rich literary, journalistic, islamologic, translated, pedagogic, and textologic works, deserves a special study in macrostructure aspect for two particular reasons: first of all, he was an Islam intellectual with a very clear cultural and patriotic consciousness who left a very voluminous and interesting work, especially in the field of Albanian islamology; then, because he is a rare and the only intellectual who remained during all the time quite per sistent in his national principles and who waged her battle in Albania against her enemies and adversaries. Unfortu nately, he is also the only creative writer of the last phase of Albanian National Renaissance and of Albanian Literature between the two wars, whose work has been unjustly and paradoxically banned, anathematized and ignored by our researchers, not only during Communist dictatorship, but also between the two wars. One of the important issues that should be mentioned in this case is the realization and the actualization of demands and aspirations of Albanian National Renaissance. Many Albanians of this age have contributed to the programme and ideological platform of the Renaissance; some of them succeeded to infiltrate primary books with Albanian alphabet in sacks of goods, the others managed to open a school in Albanian, and some of Albanian Revival activists even removed and expelled rulers representatives. Each
M M í I l А И X f O I I í f í il I of them contributed to Albanian national awakening and cause according to his capacities and possibilities, endan gering his own life for the national ideal. Çajupi very well pointed out that “each of them put a small stone in the building of our nation”. I would not like to consider the contribution of our Renaissance activists in scale, preferring those who stood higher than the others on the stair, but I am rather inclined to treat them on a horizontal level, where there are concentric circles around a core. In this way I would appreciate more those who stand closer to the core, accor ding to their contribution to national altar. In this sense, I think that significant literary works are “Songs of Milosao”, “Flowers of Summer”, “Qerbelaja”, but to our culture I should include also “Seven Dreams of Albania”, “Jusuf and Zeliha” by Hafiz Ali Korça, then “Thoughts” by Rexhep Voka, or “Religious Confessions” by Haxhi Voka, etc. I am aware that the first school of Korça is important, but Mati Logoreci’s school and Haxhi Vokas school are important as well; I am convinced that the Congress of Manastır is significant, but I believe that the implementation of deci sions of the Congress of Dibra by Hafiz Ali Korça is also significant. His life, his political, educational nd pedagogic view points, which were pointed in this monograph, are results of political, social and creative developments of that age on the one hand, and on the other, they are testimonies of demands and aspirations of Albanian people, whose natio nal conscious-ness was
deepening more and more. At the same time, his viewpoints are the natural consequence and results of Albanian national movement of the middle 19th century, which took larger proportions in ‘20-30 of this
tilli ill КІМ I E r i SHE (İPSİ century, because Hafiz Ali Korça’s consciousness, as a pat riot, enlightenment activist, well known islamologist, had its roots in his own people and in his knowledge of real Albanian life. His life and his conceptions were shaped also by general warring atmosphere that dominated in Ballkans of that time. Our writer and late Renaissance represen tative, grew up in this struggle, in which he participated actively and became one of its outstanding figures. The glory of his personality does not consist only in his participation to this struggle, but because he knew how to get messages, he also knew how to distinguish the danger that was threatening our people. He was aware that our people was threatened both by foreign invaders as well as by domestic rulers, against whom he reacted vigorously, taking off their masks and unmasking their hostile and demonie intentions. Hafiz Ali Korça started his patriotic and creative acti vities in the period of organized efforts of Albanians for national independence. He started his patriotic efforts in Korça, that at that time, was an important economic and cultural centre. He was intellectually and spiritually trained in order to become a combatant of Albanian inde pendence. Hafiz Ali Korça very early fegun his collabora tion with veterans of Albanian Renaissance, such as Mihail Grameno, Luigj Gurakuqi, Sami Pojani, Lutfi Zavalani, Gjergj Fishta, Abdyl Ypi, etc. Stimulated and instigated by patriotic motives, he collaborated with Albanian maga zines, “Korça” and with some other magazines abroad, such as
“Sabah”, “Sirati Mustekin”, “Aksham”, “Es-Si-jasetu” and “E-Hal-Laxh”. He published his first social, political and national articles and essays in these magazines.
i s к i i i t i « : d ւ virst ւ Hafiz Ali Korça was a teacher at the Secondary School of Korça. Although he was specialized in the field of islamistics and oriental philology, beside philological subjects, he would teach also some other subjects of exact science: mathematics, geometry, astronomy, etc. It is necessary to point out that Hafiz Ali Korça with deep pain experienced the troubles and problems of Albania during Balkan Wars and the First War. All the same, he never stopped his patriotic activities. He expe rienced with a bitter indignation the government of Prince Wied, on whom, like so many other Albanian activists, he layed expectations and hopes as the leader, who conld sett le internal problems of Albania. During the years 1918-24, Hafiz Ali Korça was a pre sident of the Supreme Shariat Council in Tirana. As the President of this Council, he undertook important measures and activities. First, he opened a “Medrese” (Secondary Religious School), and then he became its first teacher. Afterwards, he insisted in implementation of modern programmes and curricula in all religious schools (medreses) of Albania. He was the compiler of those new curricula. This was the way, according to him, of the trans formation of Albanian education. Likewise, he wrote a serial of handbooks for Albanian schools. However, after the publication of his work “Seven Dreams of Albania” in 1924, he was dismissed not only from his fimction as the President of Supreme Shariat Council, but also from all other activities in Islam education in Albania. It is obvious that he was a victim of
anti-national forces. Nevertheless, he continued to serve his motherland with the same vigour and enthusiasm. He spent the last part of his life in Tirana and Kavajë. The last years of his life were
g i м i ։ i i к о к ( i tiik g и i v í p g і years of misery, as he was doomed to live in poverty and oblivion. These circumstances remind us an old historical experience, according to which: “The rulers very often vio late without mercy, corpses of combatants who have traced out the route of their triumph”. Hafiz Ali Korça is one of the rare creative writers of our literature, who during his life had to cope and to over come various troubles, blows, ups and downs, difficul ties and obstacles, afthough he has never succumbed but resisted and struggled for his ideals. He has never been disappointed or disillusioned. He passed through three terrible historical periods: the period of Turkish rule, the period of political struggle inside Albania between two wars, and the period of Communist slavery. And, rather ironically, he has challenged all these periods without hesi tation, fear and despair. This is the way how this figure was forged as the creative writer, combatant, ideologist of patriotism, visionary, an enlightenment, national and reli gious activist, a brave man, who fought for belief, but who never forgot his duty to his motherland. Thanks to this study, both the biography and activities of this outstanding representative of late Renaissance, once ignored and marginalized, he emerges now in front of us, with his chastity, principles and ideals, which enabled us to research the main points of his statics; first his vigorous and consistent struggle for establishment of Albanian religious and public schools; for Albanian school-books, both public and religious; for
Albanian alphabet with Latin letters until 1912; the seeond: his struggle and efforts aimed at inter nal stability of Albania, when Albania was endangered by deceitful ideology of Bolshevism in 1920-25; third: his illu sions about the Second World War and the period after it, I 307
i s i å i ւ i i i ւ i i ТЕГНИ I when all national and democratic ideals of Hafiz Ali Korça as well as of a lot of other Albanian intellectuals and crea tive writers were buried by the installment of Communist dictatorship after 1944. Hafiz Ali Korça’s literary activities, according to their topics and subjects may be divided into two parts: the first part includes works dealing with themes and subjects of patriotism, national awakening and national freedom and independence, including his masterpiece “The Seven Dreams of Albania”, while to the second part belong all his other contributions in certain time and space. In his collection of poems “The Seven Dreams of Al bania” Hafiz Ali Korça expresses clearly, his ideological standpoint of national movement, seen by him as a uni fication of revolutionary and democratic forces; his trust in leaders with a sound patriotic and religious moral, who would deserve to ensure the right and fair leadership to Albania. In this collection of poems, he articulates his aspi rations and makes diagnosis of real politics that could be evaluated as the best estimations in Albanian poetry in the first 23 years of twentieth century. Besides historical wounds, he discovers in his collection some other political wounds, for which he often tries to anticipate and find out remedies for their healing. Islam subjects and topics in Hafiz All’s works make the most volumi-nous and the most interesting part ofhis crea tive activities. This Albanian author in Albanian literature of Islam influence has treated almost the same topics and subjects and
themes that had been treated by well-known world poets: Firdussi and El Jami in Persian literature, Ibn Farid and El Bussiri in Arabic literature and Suleiman Çelebi among Turks. Apart from the subject of Jusufi and
11(11 111 1111(1 I i ī 1 і N E lirit Zeliha and Mevlude, Hafiz Ali succeeded to create in Albanian literature of Islam influence, the Albanian epic entitled “The Holy History and the Four Khalifets”. In this work, the author has accumulated all his knowledge, inclu ding the history of Kur’an in order to create an original and genuine work of Islam history. This work is a rare treasure. The collection of poems “The Holy History and the Four Khalifets” reflects the real value of conceptions and right Islam thoughts of basic principles of Islam religion. Oriental literatures, particularly Arab and Persian lite ratures, had influenced very much the poetic work of Hafiz Ali. His poetic taste was moulded under the influence of these literatures. Thanks to his reading of original literary and artistic works of Arabic and Persian literatures, he was able to get acquainted with the literatures of both past and modern periods. The result of the influence of Arabic and Persian lite ratures on the creation of Hafiz Ah is the use of distich, rhyme and quatrains, which are the characteristics of Oriental literature. His poetry is overwhelmed by a high degree of feelings, inspirations and polemics. Hafiz Ah Korça’s style usually uses various metaphors, symbols and comparisons, he creates artistic nuances of emotions and thoughts. He uses metaphors, images and figures mainly in the poems of the first part of his collec tion “The Seven Dreams of Albania”, when his artistic and creative experience was more powerful while he was able to notice the adequate internal forms of his
inspiration. The transformations of his expression in his symbols show how much he was eager to generalize the meaning of his poetry. His poetry was also distinguished by its varieties of verses and stanzas, among which he managed to use successfully
*41 Μ Я ¡I 1 I ilişil If S I I i I octosyllabic verse, decasyllabic verse, twelve syllable and sixteen syllable verses. Three kinds of these verses are the characteristics of Albanian folk verses. So far historical, literary, critical and islamologic stu dies have not been dedicated at all to this personality, the refore his life and work were unknown to our readers. Just because of this reason, macrostudies on this writer were very much needed in order to elucidate his life and work that are not only tightly connected with his historical, so cial and political progress of Albania, but also with the development of educational system and Islam religious culture among Albanians. Hafiz Ali Korça։ s work gives us an opportunity to approach and study his works from many aspects and standpoints. Finally, Hafiz Ali Korça and his work are two insepa rable organic parts of his fame. There are no gaps between them. Hafiz Ali Korça is ranked among those combatants writers and islamologists of Albanian Renaissance, whose life and work may open new paths in national, cultural and religious progress. |
