Summary The Vienna Dictate, Transylvania and Romanian-Hungarian Relations (1940-1944) Proposing a subject of diplomatic and international relations history, the author devoted his historiographical research to some effects of the Vienna Dictate [August 30,1940), an event that caused the division of Transylvania by Germany and Italy and the joining of its northern part with Hungary. In this study, the main actors are Germany, Italy, Romania and Hungary, while the stage is Transylvania and the backstage is the European continent. One of the main consequences of the Vienna Dictate was the deterioration of the population’s condition in Transylvania, that consisted both of Romanians and Hungarians, to the point of atrocities and massacres among the Romanians in the Northern Transylvania under the Hungarian rule. On the other hand, the relations between Romania and Hungary reached such a conflictual state that the possibility of military confrontations was a continuous threat. Assuming the role of arbitrators in the area, Germany and Italy made a mixed Inquiry Commission [Rogeri-Altenburg, in 1940 and Rogeri-Hencke in 1942) with the purpose to monitor Transylvania according to the Vienna Dictate from August 30, 1940. Consequently, the social and political conflicts in Transylvania openly continued to get worse while the Axe Powers maneuvered Romania and Hungary to serve their interests to pursue the war in the East. References are made to the fundamental documents of the diplomatic offices in Berlin and Rome relating to the German and Italian Inquiry Commission. The study
The Vienna Dictate -Transylvania as a territory compensation (1940-1944)” reveals the fundamental aspects of the Axe Powers’, Romania’s and Hungary’s diplomatic actions in relation with the activity of the German and Italian Inquiry Commission with reference to the political and military developments in Central and
Vasile Puşcaş 352 Eastern Europe. The author’s point of view shows that this German and Italian mediation had negative effects not only in Transylvania but also on the bilateral relations between Romania and Hungary on one part, and on those of Romania and Hungary with the Axe Powers on the other. Even Germany and Italy had to face unfavourable consequences of their own mediation in Central and Eastern Europe. The author’s intention was also to warn about a historical experience that could be a useful lesson for the European prospects especially in the Central and Eastern part of the continent.

Summary The Vienna Dictate, Transylvania and Romanian-Hungarian Relations (1940-1944) Proposing a subject of diplomatic and international relations history, the author devoted his historiographical research to some effects of the Vienna Dictate [August 30,1940), an event that caused the division of Transylvania by Germany and Italy and the joining of its northern part with Hungary. In this study, the main "actors" are Germany, Italy, Romania and Hungary, while the stage is Transylvania and the backstage is the European continent. One of the main consequences of the Vienna Dictate was the deterioration of the population’s condition in Transylvania, that consisted both of Romanians and Hungarians, to the point of atrocities and massacres among the Romanians in the Northern Transylvania under the Hungarian rule. On the other hand, the relations between Romania and Hungary reached such a conflictual state that the possibility of military confrontations was a continuous threat. Assuming the role of "arbitrators" in the area, Germany and Italy made a mixed Inquiry Commission [Rogeri-Altenburg, in 1940 and Rogeri-Hencke in 1942) with the purpose to monitor Transylvania according to the Vienna Dictate from August 30, 1940. Consequently, the social and political conflicts in Transylvania openly continued to get worse while the Axe Powers maneuvered Romania and Hungary to serve their interests to pursue the war in the East. References are made to the fundamental documents of the diplomatic offices in Berlin and Rome relating to the German and Italian Inquiry Commission. The study
"The Vienna Dictate -Transylvania as a territory compensation (1940-1944)” reveals the fundamental aspects of the Axe Powers’, Romania’s and Hungary’s diplomatic actions in relation with the activity of the German and Italian Inquiry Commission with reference to the political and military developments in Central and
Vasile Puşcaş 352 Eastern Europe. The author’s point of view shows that this German and Italian mediation had negative effects not only in Transylvania but also on the bilateral relations between Romania and Hungary on one part, and on those of Romania and Hungary with the Axe Powers on the other. Even Germany and Italy had to face unfavourable consequences of their own mediation in Central and Eastern Europe. The author’s intention was also to warn about a historical experience that could be a useful lesson for the European prospects especially in the Central and Eastern part of the continent.
