SUMMARY The volume that you are now holding ofthe Catalogue ofthe Krakow Scientific Library ofthe Polish Academy ofArts and Sciences and the Polish Academy ofSciences Print Room, Dutch School of the 16th, 17th, 18th century incorporates the works of seven teenprintmakers (see: Spis treści). It is a continuation of a publication initiated in 1991 (see: Bibliografia i Litertura: Katalog rycin...) State-of-the-art and the framework for the sequence of the overview of the engra vings is based on Hollstein’s Dutch Flemish series. The prints have been discussed separately and assigned individual catalogue numbers. It facilitated registering differ ent states of the prints, but also allowed for a more comprehensive description of their preservation and provenance. The works reviewed can be divided applying two crite ria concurrently: chronologic and artistic - 16th century prints of Lucas van Leyden and their copies, 17th and 18th century works of Dutch printmakers working in Italy, Amsterdam and those arriving from Southern Netherlands, as well as the works of 17th century Southern Netherlands artists active in Antwerp and Europe. Chronologically, the first printmaker whose work has been described in the Catalogue... is Lucas van Leyden. He was the first Netherlandish printmaker whose fame spread far beyond the borders of his motherland. His oeuvre remains inextri cably intertwined with the achievements of the most famous printmakers of the first half of the 16th century: Marcantonio Raimondi, and, in particular, Albrecht Dürer. The works of Lucas, alongside those of
Durer’s, came to constitute a milestone in the advancement of printmaking as an autonomous art. The fruit of his work was desired by numerous buyers including artists looking for a source of inspiration, as well as collectors ֊ an emerging category of customers. Lucas van Leyden’s prints have been registered in Polish collections since the end of the 18th century, an instance of which is an item from the collection of Fryderyk Józef Moszyński (cat. 307). It is evident from the studies and catalogues published that besides the Print Room, Van Leyden’s works are currently represented in a num ber of collections in Poland. The most numerous collection, which constitutes a part of a larger one belonging to Izabela (Iza) Działyńska, is placed as a deposit at the Princes Czartoryski Museum in Krakow. The countess consistently collected following the Le Peintre Graveur by Bartsch (Stogdon 1996, p. 176-177; Krużel 2001, p. 155-156). The National Museum in Warsaw holds a significant number of impressions that used to constitute the former Wroclaw collection, in many cases of excellent condition. In the National Museum in Gdańsk, in a partly scattered collection of Jacob Kabrun, one comes across the original works of Lucas’s as well as copies of his works (Zabuska
274 2000, vol. I, p. 73; vol. II, p. 280-281). The Museum of the Kujawy and Dobrzyń Land in Włocławek holds woodcuts designed by Lucas for the series Biblia Pauperum and Sybille as well as one engraving (Zapora 2010, nr 3, 7, 21, 26, 51-54). The set of the works of the printmaker in the Print Room mainly comes from col lections of famous German collectors: Hans A. von Derschau, Wilhelm H.F.K. von Lepeli and Karl F.F. von Nagler. Originally kept in The Library of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin (Bibliothek der Königliche Akademie der Künste), after 1831 they were relocated to the Kupferstichkabinett des Königlichen Museums, Berlin, nowa days the Museum of Prints and Drawings in Berlin. The duplicates of the prints from this collection were in part transferred back to the Library of the Academy of Fine Arts. These items are labelled on the reverse with provenance stamps denoting their origin with regard to the collections mentioned above, some of them bearing addi tional pencil marks: Dbl., Dpi (see: Znaki własnościowe i proweniencyjne, որ 9). The prints were kept in the Berlin library collection until the Second World War, then in 1944, having been transported by the Germans to repositories in Lower Silesia, they were taken over by the Polish authorities. A similar journey was made by a print re located from Görlitz (cat. *353). Another portion of Lucas’s prints, second in its size in the collection, originates from the former PAAS Print Room, the Maciej Wodziński collection in particular, and one from the Moszyński collection. The provenance of some of these prints
remains unknown. The collection of the works of Lucas in the Print Room was first catalogued in 1986 (Bóbr, Krużel 1986). It was then compiled only in the 21st century for the purpose of an online register of the scientific and artistic collections of PAAS (www.pauart.pl). They are in their majority prints of average or poor quality, missing the tonal effects, and the technical virtuosity of the artist remains hard to discern. The highest quality print is Christ as a Gardener 1519 (cat. 302), while St Mary Magdalene in the Desert dated around 1506 (cat. 351) appears to have come from the most damaged plate. St Jerome in His Study (cat. 343) with the address of Maarten Peeters completes the lack of the untraced state 2nd in the volume of the New Hollstein Dutch Flemish series devoted to Lucas, most probably a case similar to the Triumph of Mardocheus (cat. 282), with a retouch on the impression. What deserves to be incorporated into Lucas’s abundant legacy are numerous copies of his plates that still await identification and cataloguing. This is why it has been de cided to include the copies in the Catalogue...՛, those anonymous as well as the ones formerly associated with Jan Muller (NHD Muller II, p. 32-33, footnote 53). Those prints replicate the originals faithfully, however, what they are missing are tonal tran sitions and the delicacy of the originals. Their most significant feature is the contrast between black and white parts, typical for a professional printmaker (or printmakers). They were most probably intended to meet the increasing demand for Lucas’s works.
Copies in the Catalogue... are listed among his prints with their numbers preceded with an asterisk. Two of the copies included have not been noted previously (cat. *290, *364). What has been excluded from the Catalogue... are the authorised copies of Van Leyden’s works, among others prints by Jan Muller and Hendrick Hondius, enumerat ed in other volumes of the Catalogue...
275 Lastman brothers belong to the printmakers active in Amsterdam in the first quar ter of the 17th century. The Print Room holds Judah and Tamar (cat. 130), one of the three etchings of Pieter (who mainly worked as a painter), the etching that was formerly attributed to Rembrandt, the most famous of his students. Nicolaes has left behind engravings made after different designs, of which the Print Room holds his magnificent but quite rare The Crucifixion ofSt. Peter after Guido Reni (cat. 129). Pieter van Laer, a Haarlem painter, one of the first Dutch peintre-graveurs, spent most of his life in Rome, mingling with the community of the artists from north-eastern Europe who had settled there. It was there that his series of etchings were created, of which Horses, made probably in the 20s of the 17th century, is represented in the Print Room (cat. 47-57: complete set and a duplicate with one print missing). Some of the prints represent intermediary state, characterised by curved plate comers and a lack of retouches in numbering (e.g. cat. 57). It was surely in the northern Netherlands that the anonymous, faithful repetition of the Various Animals series (cat. *39-*46) was created. Its copies are frequently erroneously considered to be Laer’s original works. Nothing is known about the printmaker from about the first half of the 17th cen tury, probably active in Amsterdam, who is known as the author of one print signed I. de Lange, depicting characters in a tavern after David Teniers the Younger. Willem van der Lande, recognised mostly for his etchings of battle scenes,
worked at that same time and in that location. A complete series Cavalry Engagements (cat. 121-126) in the Print Room originates from the Moszyński collection. Two more portraitists, Jan Lamsvelt (cat. 120), whose work is mentioned in Hollstein’s Dutch Flemish series only marginally, and Jan de Leeuw were active in Hague and Amsterdam during the second half of the 17th century. De Leeuw is the author of, among others, a magnifi cent portrait of Eugene of Savoy probably by Adriaen de Werff (cat. 151 ), as well as a picture of Joseph Justus Scaliger (cat. 152 A) which remains in the portrait convention from the turn of the 16th century. The work of Gérard de Lairesse, bom in Liège, but from 1665 based in Amster dam, falls on the final decades of the 17th century. In his frequently reprinted treatise on painting (Het Groot Schilderboek..., 1st ed. Amsterdam 1707) he dealt with, how ever marginally, the matter of printmaking. Lairesse as a painter was a leading Dutch classicist inspired by the French school. In the graphic art that he practiced he was closer to, formally as well as intellectually, 17th century Italian etching. He signed his prints with elaborate inscriptions of his own as well as borrowed from the classical authors. The majority of Lairesse’s prints were created independently from his paint ings or were variations based on their compositions. Over 200 prints, illustrations and frontispieces, both his own or after his composition, as well as works of his students, were collected in a publication entitled Gerardi de Lairesse Leodiensis Pictoris Opus
Elegantissimum... published in 1694 in Amsterdam and later frequently reprinted. The surviving copies of the Opus Elegantissimum... generally differ with regard to both their content and the sequence of the prints included. Unfortunately, the states of the prints mentioned, beginning with those avant-la-lettre to those with addresses of consecutive publishers, function exclusively as a collected edition (Timm.; H.).
276 Missing references to individual prints do not allow for a satisfactory identification of individual copies. In the collection of the Print Room you will find a set of 59 prints of Lairesse that constitute a representative overview of his artistic work in the field of graphic art. It is worth to underline that they are in most cases early first-hand editions pub lished before 1694. The ones that are worthy of particular attention are, among others: the Ecstasy of St Teresa of Avila that references the Bernini sculpture composition (cat. 64) and the Great Bacchanal (cat. 80), of which a model drawing is preserved. Selene and Sleeping Endymion (cat. 66) reused by Lairesse in a painting lost in 1944, which belonged to a private collection in Warsaw (Ryszkiewicz 1964), is also worth mentioning. His monumental compositions are best represented by a pair of allegori cal prints with ancient deities as the protectors of virtues: Temple of Virtue (The Young Man Sacrificing) and Minerva Protecting Piety, Innocence, and Justice (cat. 97-98). Lairesse also illustrated Andries Pels’ play (a farce) published in Amsterdam in 1668 (cat. 115-117). With a few exceptions, Lairesse’s prints originate from the former Schlesisches Museum der Bildenden Künste in Breslau (Silesian Museum of Fine Arts in Wroclaw), from the Rehdigerana and Magdaleniana collections. The prints from Magdaleniana which are labelled with additional numbers on their reverse constitute a fragment of the collections of Albrecht von Sebisch Younger and Emst W. Hubrig. Within Lairesse’s circle we can find his son Jan,
also a painter, who was the author of illustrations to the aforementioned treatise on the art of painting (cat. 118-119). Another frequent collaborator was Johannes Glauber, whose arcadian landscapes were transferred to etchings by Adolf van der Laan, a Dutch etcher marginally men tioned in Hollstein’s German series. Laan’s prints compose a part of Veertig stuks Landschappen... (Amsterdam, c. 1721). A copy of the album held in the Print Room must have already belonged to a Polish collection in the 18th century as it bears the stamps of Fryderyk J. Moszyński (cat. 1-37). Jan Frederick Lange, active in Amster dam at the turn of the 17th and 18th century was the author of the bookplate of Joseph Augustin Brentano, a local merchant and a collector (cat. 128A) - chronologically the latest of the works described in the Catalogue... The other set included in the Catalogue., consists of the works of printmakers from Flanders, mainly in the Antwerp circles in the 17th century. Willem van der Leeuw, who might have also operated in Amsterdam, made compositions after not only Peter Paul Rubens, but also Rembrandt and his school. Some of his prints included in the Catalogue... represent early states from before the introduction c. 1630 of the publish ing address of Cornelis Danckerts I, a printmaker and publisher in Amsterdam. An example can be found in the Hunts series after Rubens (cat. 161-164), which are most probably made after a print by Pieter Soutman, a printmaker from the Rubens studio and a teacher of Van der Leeuw. One of Leeuw’s prints (cat. 164A) was attributed in an
earlier volume of the Catalogue... to Comelis Danckerts I (Motyka III, 47). Nicolaes Lauwers’ engravings bear characteristics of a direct connection with Rubens studio. His works in the collection of the Print Room are represented by the Adoration ofthe Magi (cat. 141-142) and Ecce Homo (cat. 142A-B). One of the prints of Ecce Homo (cat. 142A), attributed to Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert, who implemented
277 changes to the plate, was included in the first volume of the Catalogue... (Krużel, Motyka I, 461). Lauwers participated in the creation of the monumental engraving series Triumph of the New Law (Triumph of the Eucharist) (cat. 143), created after Rubens’ designs for the famous tapestry cycle. The graphic effects of Lauwers’ en gravings such as St Cecilia with Three Angels Making Music (cat. 144) or Smoking Soldiers in an Inn (cat. 145-146) convey amazing chiaroscuro of the paintings of Gerard Seghers, a Utrecht caravaggionist. Conrad, Nicolaes’ son, also worked on the prints from the Triumph of the Eucha rist series (cat. 131) and copied works of famous painters as well. What Hollstein’s Dutch Flemish series does not mention is that he also dealt in etchings with at least four of the prints of his origin belonging to the Print Room: copies of Various animals by Stefano della Bella (cat. 132-135). Prints after Peter Paul Rubens enumerated in the Catalogue... are all included in the on-line catalogue of PAAS www.pauart.pl. Brussels-born Valentin Lefebre, since his early years active in Venice, was a paint er, printmaker and a draughtsman working under a strong impact from the Italian art of the 16th century. He created numerous etchings and left behind an unfinished work, Opera selectiora..., published posthumously (Venice 1682). It consists of 53 prints after the paintings and drawings of Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. The work has been considered the most representative and wide-ranging initiative devoted to pro pagating Venetian painting from the time of Titian.
Lefebre’s etchings are made after a number of 16th century paintings and drawings as well as prints. Due to the di versity of the original material, cataloguing Lefebre’s prints faces various research challenges beyond those of solely history of printmaking. They are predominantly concerned with contemporary attribution of the works of the Venetian masters or the history of the prototypes, including those currently missing. These issues pertain to, for instance, etchings depicting landscapes (cat. 232-233,237, 238). The Print Room holds a nearly complete set of Opera selectiora... Of particular interest are prints cre ated on two plates after large scale paintings of Veronese: The Supper in the House of Simon (cat. 180-181) and the Apotheosis of Venice (Triumph of Venice) (cat. 225). The Catalogue... also mentions counterproofs of some of the prints, including those with masked inscriptions suggesting avant-la-lettre state, such as Christ Crowned with Thorns (cat. 188) and Allegory ofFaith (cat. 220). The prints of Lefebre held in the Print Room comprise a fragment of the collec tions of Sebisch the Younger and Hubrig which also contained the aforementioned im pressions of Lairesse. A significant group of Lefebre’s prints is included in an album belonging to Carl F. von Rumohr auctioned in 1864 in Dresden along with the graphic collection of this art historian (see: p. 86). This brief summary of the contents of the Catalogue... concludes with the work of Jan Frederick Leonart, a Dutch printmaker-portraitist, who operated in a number of European cities. He created
portraits for historical publications and it is his mezzo tints that are worthy of special attention, some of which are true rarities. His portrait of Bernard Ignác Martinitz after Karel Škreta (cat. 252) is missing from literature as well as from Czech and Austrian on-line repositories.

It is a continuation of a publication initiated in 1991 (see: Bibliografia i Litertura: Katalog rycin.) State-of-the-art and the framework for the sequence of the overview of the engra vings is based on Hollstein’s Dutch Flemish series. Chronologically, the first printmaker whose work has been described in the Catalogue. is Lucas van Leyden.
This is why it has been de cided to include the copies in the Catalogue.՛, those anonymous as well as the ones formerly associated with Jan Muller (NHD Muller II, p.
Copies in the Catalogue. are listed among his prints with their numbers preceded with an asterisk. Two of the copies included have not been noted previously (cat. *290, *364). What has been excluded from the Catalogue. are the authorised copies of Van Leyden’s works, among others prints by Jan Muller and Hendrick Hondius, enumerat ed in other volumes of the Catalogue.
In his frequently reprinted treatise on painting (Het Groot Schilderboek., 1st ed.
Elegantissimum. published in 1694 in Amsterdam and later frequently reprinted. The surviving copies of the Opus Elegantissimum. generally differ with regard to both their content and the sequence of the prints included.
Laan’s prints compose a part of Veertig stuks Landschappen. 128A) - chronologically the latest of the works described in the Catalogue. Some of his prints included in the Catalogue. represent early states from before the introduction c. 164A) was attributed in an
earlier volume of the Catalogue. to Comelis Danckerts I (Motyka III, 47).
277 changes to the plate, was included in the first volume of the Catalogue. 132-135). Prints after Peter Paul Rubens enumerated in the Catalogue. are all included in the on-line catalogue of PAAS www.pauart.pl. Brussels-born Valentin Lefebre, since his early years active in Venice, was a paint er, printmaker and a draughtsman working under a strong impact from the Italian art of the 16th century. He created numerous etchings and left behind an unfinished work, Opera selectiora., published posthumously (Venice 1682).
The Print Room holds a nearly complete set of Opera selectiora. Of particular interest are prints cre ated on two plates after large scale paintings of Veronese: The Supper in the House of Simon (cat. 180-181) and the Apotheosis of Venice (Triumph of Venice) (cat. 225). The Catalogue. also mentions counterproofs of some of the prints, including those with masked inscriptions suggesting avant-la-lettre state, such as Christ Crowned with Thorns (cat. 86). This brief summary of the contents of the Catalogue. concludes with the work of Jan Frederick Leonart, a Dutch printmaker-portraitist, who operated in a number of European cities. He created
portraits for historical publications and it is his mezzo tints that are worthy of special attention, some of which are true rarities. His portrait of Bernard Ignác Martinitz after Karel Škreta (cat. 252) is missing from literature as well as from Czech and Austrian on-line repositories.
