SUMMARY The State Hermitage Museum celebrates the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War with the exhibition On Opposite Sides of the Front Line'. This title embodies the key idea of the exhibition: a nar rative of deadly opposition in the wartime Leningrad, told through books, drawings and records produced by Soviet and German authorities. On the 'one side' of the exhibition are Soviet and Russian publications, drawings and illustrations from the wartime and postwar years that testify to the harm inflicted upon palaces and monuments located in Len ingrad, its suburbs and other areas. The appearance of the besieged city, its heroic deed and the struggle of its residents and the Red Army are all immortalised in the drawings of the artists and architects that stayed in Leningrad, defending it at the front line. These works have become invaluable historical records revealing the truth about the city's life during the war. The front line went through the Hermitage in its own way too. Within the shortest possible time, its collections were evacuated to Sverdlovsk. Distant from the battlefront, this city took care of over 1,200,000 works of art from the Hermitage Museum throughout the entire war. The museum employees stayed on day-andnight duty in the rooms, attics and on the roofs of the museum buildings in an effort to mitigate the damage to the world's treasure house of arts, caused by hostile bombing and shelling. Views of the Hermitage during the siege are shown in the drawings of such artists as Alexander Nikolsky, Vera Milyutina and Andrey Kaplun. Both at
the front and in the besieged Leningrad, people had a special feeling about books, taking them as spiritual bread with which to survive in the most severe conditions. Leningrad residents still keep at home the books that belonged to their families during the siege. 122
The other side' of the exhibition is represented by German printed matter. This includes a German gift al bum, released for the Christmas of 1943 to be sent to Ger many to the families of the military engaged in the siege of Leningrad. It reproduces twelve photographs with the views of Leningrad and its suburbs, Veliky Novgorod, Lake Ladoga and Volkhov River under occupation, taken by a German military photographer. With the cessation of the siege in 1944, the album ended up in the hands of the architect and Senior Lieutenant Ivan (Vano) Metskhvarishvili. Among the exhibits is a 1943 calendar, published for the residents of the Leningrad Region, who had to live in the territory occupied by the Germans. Both parties waged war not only with guns and air planes, but also with ideological weapons. These include propaganda leaflets: the Soviet ones, dropped from the planes over the German positions at the Leningrad front, and the German ones, intended for the Red Army soldiers. The topic of the Great Patriotic War is boundless. As time goes by, we still come up with a panoply of new questions. The generations of today and tomorrow have to go ahead on their own, searching, analysing, making conclusions and mistakes, and searching again. We must learn the truth, find the unaccounted-for, narrate the un known episodes of the war, paying tribute to those who once rescued our world, our country and ourselves. 123 |
