Summary Thebookisa continuation of the publication Lidové písně z KouHmska (Folk Songs of the Kouřim Region) from 2012. It is based on the author s fiirther archival and field research. The aim of the publication is to study folk songs in the region of Kouřim, located in the eastern part of the Central Bohemian Region. This area has always stood aside research into folk songs, among other things because of its location, proximity to the capital city of Prague, and the related earlier demise of some manifestations of traditional folk culture. In addition, there has never been a folklore movement or en semble in the region, and only a few songs from this area have ever been published. The author presents about 150 songs from previously unpublished manuscript collections, mostly from the turn of the 20th century, and 160 songs from his own records made in 2013-2020. In the accompanying study, the author evaluates the course of field research. He compares songs written down from the oral tradition with both published and unpublished versions; using the variation process, he tries to prove that the songs have been handed down orally. He also shows which songs are likeiy to have spread otherwise (by means of radio, gramophone records or school instruction). The oldest living songs correspond in their style to songs from the classic Czech song collection published by Karel Jaromír Erben in the middle of the 19th century. Those that do not stylistically correspond to the hitherto common dances of the polka and waltz (e.g. songs in the rhythms of the mazurka and polonaise) are rare
in the present-day repertoire. The songs of older style include, for example, ‘Anduličko moje’ (My Beloved Annie), Měla jsem milého, už nemám nic’ (I Used to Have a Sweetheart), Panímámo zlatá (Dear Bride’s Mother), and ‘Ten vitickej kostelíček’ (The Church of Vitice). The author also notices later folklore. It includes i.a. songs reacting to his torical and political events of the 20th century. A significant group is formed by songs of soldiers from the First World War: ‘Tam na břehu řeky Drin/ (There on the Bank of the River Drina) and ‘Nastaly nám doby zlé’ (The Times Are Bad). Some songs react to the Nazi occupation of 1939-1945, such as the tra ditional ballad about the extermination of the village of Lidice in 1942, Poblíž Buštěhradu’ (Near Buštěhrad). Another group comprises satirical songs from the time of the Communist dictatorship, especially from the collectivisation in agriculture, Vzali nám traktor/ (The/ve Taken Our Tractors). The later living folklore also includes a large number of pub and humorous songs, often with lascivious lyrics, for instance ‘Když jsem se dal oholiť (When I Got Shaved). It is interesting to note that the ability to sing songs from memory is disappearing in the population. The best singers were in their nineties, i.e. people bom between 1920 and 1930. They were able to memorise even longer songs. In younger genera tions, such as people born in 1940-1950, this ability is rare. Most septuagenarians remember only a part of the text, often an incomplete melody, they have prob lems remembering the songs, and their knowledge of the
songs is mostly passive. There is also a difference between how both generations perceive a folk song. The older generation takes it for granted that the songs in the oral tradition changed; for example, the signers regularly adapted place names to their locality. Therefore, 402
Summary they consider all such traditional variants to be equally authentic. The younger generation, on the other hand, tends to assume that there is an original version of the song (known, published, written in another region). Consequently, they logi cally regard the use of place names from their region as derived and inauthentic. The main contribution of the publication is that it presents a picture of the develop ment of the folk-song repertoire in the Czech countryside especially in the second half of the 20th century. Of course, the song repertoire also includes many artificial songs, mainly from brass-band repertoire, which have not been the main subject of research and are only mentioned by the author. According to the author, it has been rather hard to receive information about older songs and it is likely that in ten years, this type of research in the region will be completely impossible.
