Résumé Karel Lobi What more can be said... Reminiscences and reflections The life story of Professor Karel Löbl (* September 21, 1925), author of this book, is divided between technology and politics. As a technological expert, he dedicated his work mostly to metalurgy and published a number of innovative papers in the field of refractories. In 1970, he became professor of the Czech Technical University; in 1977-1988 he was a correspondent member, in 1988—1992 a member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Scienc es. His political cereer started in fatefhl years of 1945-1948 when he was one of leading representetives of the Youth Organisation of the Czecho slovak National Socialist Party, however, in 1948, he left the political life, only to come back in Spring 1968. In 1968-1990 he was vice-president of the Czechoslovak Socialist Party, in 1969-1976 minister of construction and technology and 1976-1989 minister without portfolio in the cabinet of the former Czech Socialist Republic, at the same time, between 1969-1990 deputy of the Federal Assembly. In 1983-1990 he was head of the Czech Council within the Czechoslovak Scientific and Technical Society. Under the adverse circumstances in Czechoslovakia in 1970s and 1980s, together with Bohuslav Kučera and other party officials and journalists, he tried to defend the autonomous position of the Czechoslovak Socialist Party, and, already under the Gorbachev era, he managed to broaden its scope of aktiv ity and opened it to oppositional movements. From the end of 1989 to June 1990, as a deputy of the Federal Assembly, he actively
participated in the transformation of the Czechoslovak political structure into a parliamentary and democratic regime. In three books of memoirs he looked back progressively at his life, his multifaceted activities and above all his political involvement. The second book, entitled Od omylů, k nadějím (From Mistakes to Hopes) and published in 2017, reflected his experiences during the revolutionary months following the November upheaval in Czechoslovakia in 1989 at the Federal Assembly, with documentary precision and a sense for detail depicting the gradual transformation of this body from a formal institution of the authoritarian regime to the functioning parliament of a democratic state. His third and final book of memoirs, published at the end of 2020, com prises six chapters. The first deals with the case of the Šlechtas, tragically stigmatized and tabooized for decades even behind the scenes in the Czech oslovak Socialist Party. Based on his own memories and those of his father, Slechta’s classmate and friend, the author attempts to sketch a professional, political, human and moral portrait of Professor Emanuel Šlechta, who he presents from a little known angle, namely as an outstanding technician, the oretician and pioneer of modern industrial organization and management, practising in the USA during the 1920s. He also considers Slechta’s wife Dr. Anna Slechtová, and her problematic influence on her husband’s polit ical career. He ultimately comes to the conclusion that during the difficult 1950s Šlechta attempted to retain the autonomous status and the specific ideological and political features of his party, so he was hounded out and liq uidated by the Communist Party leadership in
collaboration with his helpers in the Czechoslovak Socialist Party. The second chapter focuses on postwar attempts by the Communist Party to discredit Vladimír Krajina, Ferdinand Peroutka and Jan Stránský, revealing the previously hidden history of the pilot issue of review Přítom nost, “re-established” under K. H. Frank, which Peroutka, brought back from a concentration camp, was meant to consecrate with his chief-editorship, and presenting for discussion a possible connection between this issue and Peroutka’s alleged Hitler is a gentleman article, which President Zeman is convinced exists. In the third chapter the author recalls his collaboration and friendship with Deputy Ota Hora, presenting him and his serious political role in the struggle against the totalitarian tendencies and police practices of the Com munist Party between 1945 and 1948. He also records Hora’s visits to his homeland after November 1989 and his vain efforts to influence the politics of the Czechoslovak Socialist Party at that time. 322
The fourth chapter presents a witness account of a gifted young techni cian’s harsh lot during the 1950s at the State Materials Research Institute, documenting in detail the history of his personal struggle with the State Security during the 1950s and the early 1960s, while analysing the forms of pressure that were meant to compel a victim to collaborate, as well as his defensive tactics. The fifth chapter recalls the history of the independent weekly Zítřek, published from October 1968 to April 1969 by Melantrich, and the econom ics journalism contribution which under his then pseudonym of Kosmas was published by young economist Vaclav Maus. He goes on to provide infor mation on the nonconformist economics seminars which Klaus and Miloš Zeman arranged in the 1980s at the Czechoslovak Scientific and Technical Society, whose Czech Council was chaired at that time by Professor Lobi, and the efforts made by the State Security to prohibit these seminars and to persecute those involved. The sixth chapter then summarizes his often pioneering official envi ronmental conservation activities under normalization and during the first months after November 1989. The documentary and memoir content of these individual chapters, often providing pioneering source material for historical researchers, permeates the personal deliberations over the events, issues and phenomena which the author sets out. In many places there is also a balanced tone, highlighted in the final reflection on possible alternatives to his own life path. 323

Résumé Karel Lobi What more can be said. Reminiscences and reflections The life story of Professor Karel Löbl (* September 21, 1925), author of this book, is divided between technology and politics. As a technological expert, he dedicated his work mostly to metalurgy and published a number of innovative papers in the field of refractories. In 1970, he became professor of the Czech Technical University; in 1977-1988 he was a correspondent member, in 1988—1992 a member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Scienc es. His political cereer started in fatefhl years of 1945-1948 when he was one of leading representetives of the Youth Organisation of the Czecho slovak National Socialist Party, however, in 1948, he left the political life, only to come back in Spring 1968. In 1968-1990 he was vice-president of the Czechoslovak Socialist Party, in 1969-1976 minister of construction and technology and 1976-1989 minister without portfolio in the cabinet of the former Czech Socialist Republic, at the same time, between 1969-1990 deputy of the Federal Assembly. In 1983-1990 he was head of the Czech Council within the Czechoslovak Scientific and Technical Society. Under the adverse circumstances in Czechoslovakia in 1970s and 1980s, together with Bohuslav Kučera and other party officials and journalists, he tried to defend the autonomous position of the Czechoslovak Socialist Party, and, already under the Gorbachev era, he managed to broaden its scope of aktiv ity and opened it to oppositional movements. He also records Hora’s visits to his homeland after November 1989 and his vain efforts to influence the politics of the Czechoslovak Socialist Party at that time. 322
The fourth chapter presents a witness account of a gifted young techni cian’s harsh lot during the 1950s at the State Materials Research Institute, documenting in detail the history of his personal struggle with the State Security during the 1950s and the early 1960s, while analysing the forms of pressure that were meant to compel a victim to collaborate, as well as his defensive tactics. The fifth chapter recalls the history of the independent weekly Zítřek, published from October 1968 to April 1969 by Melantrich, and the econom ics journalism contribution which under his then pseudonym of Kosmas was published by young economist Vaclav Maus. He goes on to provide infor mation on the nonconformist economics seminars which Klaus and Miloš Zeman arranged in the 1980s at the Czechoslovak Scientific and Technical Society, whose Czech Council was chaired at that time by Professor Lobi, and the efforts made by the State Security to prohibit these seminars and to persecute those involved. The sixth chapter then summarizes his often pioneering official envi ronmental conservation activities under normalization and during the first months after November 1989. The documentary and memoir content of these individual chapters, often providing pioneering source material for historical researchers, permeates the personal deliberations over the events, issues and phenomena which the author sets out. In many places there is also a balanced tone, highlighted in the final reflection on possible alternatives to his own life path. 323 |
