Резюме THE KOKALYANE URVICH FORTRESS AND THE LATE MEDIEVAL MONASTERY INSIDE IT Nikolai Ovcharov, Filip Petrunov (Summary) This monograph presents the main results of decades of excavations at the remarkable late antique and medieval Urvich Fortress near the village of Kokalyane, Sofia region. In the recent years, the remains of a very interesting monastery dating from the 15th to the 17th centuries have been uncovered there. It was built after the fortress had been captured and destroyed by the Ottoman conquerors in the late 14th c. Archaeological research shows that the monastery existed until the end of the 17th or the very beginning of the 18th c., when it was set on fire by the Turks. Thus, over three centuries it safeguarded the Bulgarian spirit in the entire Sofia region. The book consists of an introduction and three parts. The first part is dedicated to the studies on the medieval fortress from the period of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom ( 12th—14th cc.), and particularly on St. Elijah Church, until 1982. As these studies are largely the work of the late Prof. Dimitar Ovcharov, this part covers his two articles of 1969 and 1979 on the results of the excavations, without making any changes in the originally published articles. One of the articles is dedicated to the key role of the fortress in the protection of the important centre of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, Sofia. In the other article D. Ovcharov examines in detail the unearthed temple and makes the conclusion that initially it had a simple single-nave structure. In the 14th c. the build ing was reconstructed
entirely and was given an elegant cross-domed shape. The first part of the study covers also an article by Nikolay Ovcharov, dedicated to the murals in St. Elijah Church uncovered in 1979. It ascertains that the first mural painting in the temple was made in the 14th c. in the high Palaiologos style. The mural paintings were most probably given a fresh touch in the 15th c. presum ably in relation with the construction of the late medieval monastery near the church. The second part of the book contains historical and archaeological studies on the Kokalyane Urvich published since 1982. This part focuses above all on the historical environment in the late 14th c. - a topic that Nikolay Ovcharov has been dealing with for many years. It reveals the role of the fortress in the fateful events of the last three decades of the 14th c. at the time of the Ottoman invasion. A lot has been gained from histori cal sources and the information from numerous tales and legends from the Sofia-Samokov region. Next, the monograph examines the stages of the archeological and interdisciplinary studies of Ur vich, carried out in the period 1982-2019. The main topic is the late medieval monastery, which existed in the ruins of the fortress in the 15th-17th. Its architecture and the different parts of the complex are presented thoroughly in detail. It is for the first time that a monastery from this period was localised archeologically in our lands. The premises in the kitchen-dining area and the residential wing, surrounded by a low, yet solid wall, were clearly identified. One could get into
the monastery through a gate and a tunnel in the residential section of the building. The monastery was undoubtedly of a communal (coenobitic) type with the inevitable passage between the dining room and the church. The kitchen (magernitsa) is of great interest, where the huge wood-fired oven can be clearly seen. According to estimates, 10-20 monks lived in the monastery, but there were also a large number of service personnel. The monks inhabited the residential wing, which was likely in two floors - the ground floor was made of stone, while the upper floor was not a solid structure. Some of the cells were heated by built-in wall stoves. The late medieval monastery of St. Elijah was an important spiritual centre for the entire Sofia region during the “dark” centuries of Turkish yoke. This is attested by a number of finds, among which the famous Urvich treasure stands out, consisting of dozens of gilded silver bridal jewellery. People used to send their children to study in the monastery, they got married there, met fellows at fairs. Documents from the period show that wealthy Bulgarians from Sofia and the surrounding villages of Kokalyane, Bistritsa, Dolni and 157
Николай Овчаров Gomi Lozen, German, etc., took care of the renovation and maintenance of the monastery. According to the documents, those people were Christians from all walks of life with certain privileges such as voynuks, celeps (sheep breeders), merchants, craftsmen, etc. It can be said that the monastery flourished in the 15th—16th centuries, which is evidenced by the inten sive coin circulation at that time. All this came to an end in the last decades of the 17th or the first decades of the 18th c. At that time, after Bulgarian uprisings against the Ottoman rule, the monastery was set on fire by the oppressors and abandoned forever. Nonetheless, the memory of the glorious Bulgarian fortress and the monastery that succeeded it was alive among the local people. First of all, there is an invaluable piece of information from the first Bulgarian Revivalist, Paisius of Hilendar, in his “Slavo-Bulgarian History”, where he mentioned the fortress and the monastery by name. Recently found information in old maps and in records of western travellers from the 17th c. indicate that people from the nearby villages remembered the name of the fortress, knew about the monastery in it and used to tell stories about them to passing foreigners. Moreover, it is not inconceivable that Paisius, born in 1722 in Samokov or its vicinity, might have visited the ruins of the monastery, which had been raised to the ground by the Turks not long ago. The third part is the work of the young archaeologist Filip Petrunov. It catalogues the hundreds of finds localised during the excavations of the
Urvich Fortress and the late medieval monastery that succeeded it. The everyday life in the monastery can be reconstructed on the basis of objects such as sewing needles, knives, various tools, fishing tackle, etc. Numerous fragments of ceramics help identify the shapes of pot tery vessels used in the 15th—17th centuries. Animal bones, diligently collected during excavations, provide grounds to get an idea of the food eaten in the monastery. Of particular interest are the comments on the Ottoman and West European coins found there. Not to mention the numerous pieces of jewellery (earrings, rings, appliqués), showing the relations of the monks with the people from the villages nearby. The large-scale study ends with data on a small but quite interesting necropolis where monks and lay people were buried. It should be noted that some of the graves have been studied by applying modem an thropological methods, which made it possible to obtain valuable information. 158 |
