SUMMARY This publication is on the subject of the collection of Banners in the Moscow Kremlin Museums. The oldest examples in the museum date from the second half of the 16th century to the middle of the 17th century. This cat alogue is divided into two volumes. The first volume comprises a description of various types of Russian Banners from the second half of the 16th century to the end of the 17th century, and foreign Banners from the middle of the 17th century to the beginning of the 18th century. The second volume describes Russian Banners of the 18th and 19th centuries, foreign Banners of the mid-19th century and examples from the Soviet period. The unique older Banners in the collection were made by royal decree in the workshops of the Moscow Kremlin by the best icon painters and artists employed in the Armoury Chamber’s icon workshop, which was founded in 1640. Many pieces in the collection are linked to significant historical events and with the names of rulers, historical figures and legendary heroes of Russia’s history. The most important of these are the Great Banner with the title of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, the Banner of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, and the Banners of Tsars Alexey Mikhailovich and Petr Alexeyevich with their coats of arms. The analysis of written sources held in archives in Moscow and St. Petersburg is essential for the study of the collection. Particularly important is the corpus of documents which was gathered by the Armoury Chamber, the place where Banners were formerly made and kept (today these documents are held in the Russian State Archive
of Ancient Acts and in the Manuscripts Department of the Moscow Kremlin Museums). The documents show that by the second half of the 17th century there were a number of Banners in the Armoury which were already almost 100 years old. They included Banners dating from the reign of Ivan the Terrible to that of Alexey Mikhailovich. Alongside the Tsars’ Treasury, which held representational and military objects, there were regimental Banners inscribed with iconographie compo sitions and the tsar’s title. In the first quarter of the 18th century, the Armoury Chamber remained the centre of Banner production for the new army. The military reforms of Peter the Great, which resulted in the formation of a regular army, were also reflected in the Russian system of Banners. Changes took place in the
SUMMARY 139 typological structure of Banners and the system by which they were assigned to regiments. In 1727, the Workshop and Armoury Chamber, the Treasury Office and the Stables Office were combined into a single store for ancient treasures under the authority of the Senate, which was the central state organ. Banners from the 17th century were kept alongside other relics of the Russian state. The beginning of the 19th century marked a new stage in the history of the Armoury Chamber as a museum, as a result of which the principles gov erning the composition of the collection changed. At this time, new objects were acquired only with “the highest possible permission”. At Nicholas I’s request, in the 1820s and 1830s a number of rare examples were added “for keeping together with other national treasures”. These included the Banner of Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky, of which a copy was made and also kept in the collection, the standards of Vasily Semenovich Volynsky, and Banners linked to Yermak, the legendary conqueror of Siberia. In 1863, at the suggestion of Minister of Court Vladimir Adlerberg, the Armoury Chamber collection was supplemented with 17th and 18th century Banners from the St. Petersburg and Moscow arsenals. Throughout the 19th century, there was a concerted effort to create a collection of rare Banners in the Armoury, as relics of the country’s history. The majority of Banners in the collection were acquired at this time. Some objects were added after the October Revolution of 1917 and a number of Banners were transferred to the Armoury in the 1930s
from state and party organisations. Today the collection of Banners in the Armoury Chamber numbers 352. The main part consists of military Banners of the 17th and early 18th centu ries (regimental, commandants’ and hundreds Banners) and those related to various formations, such as Streltsy, soldiers’ and Cossack Banners. The collection also includes 138 Finíais from lost Banners and accessories such as shoulder belts and Banner ribbons. The collection of Banners in the Moscow Kremlin Museums is a unique group of objects that is a cultural and historical phenomenon.
