'This superb collection of essays preservis a very fimely reconsideration of many key independent and radical films, their coniext of production and exhibition in the 1970s. and their continuing importance for the aesthetics and politics of image making in our current era.' 'This anthology brilliantly reflects the struggles and achievements of a generation of filmmakers and film scholars outside Britain's commercial entertainment industry. Edited by two key figures from the movement and introducing texts by leading contemporary scholars on this period, this book offers new insights into a vibrant, influential and often highly contested film culture.' ‘An invaluable reference source for academics, researchers and the wider public less familiar with this significant period of British film history.' he innovations and debates in experimental film in the 1970s hove had far-reaching long-lasting influence, and there is a resurgence of interesi in the decade today. Professor Laura Muivey, ana writer/direcior Sue Clayton, bring together journalists and scholars at the cutting edge of research into 1970s radical cinema forthis collection. Chapters are aí once historically grounded yet fused with current analysis, to rediscover a unique moment for extraordinary film production. Other Cinemas establishes the factors that helped to shape alternative film: world cinema and Internationalism, the politics of cultural policy and arts funding, new accessible technologies, avant-garde theories, and the development of a dynamic and interactive relationship between film and its audiences.
Exploring and celebrating the work of The Other T Cinema, the London Film-makers' Co-op and other cornerstones of film culture, as well as the impact of creatives such as William Raban, Stephen Dwoskin, and Clayton and Muivey, this book takes account of a wave of sodally-aware film practice. Undoubtedly, this body of work has fed into the activist, queer, minority and feminist cinema of the present moment. SUE CLAYTON is Professor of Film and Television at Goldsmiths, University of London, UK. She Is also о screenwriter and film director, and her fiction films include The Song of the Shirt (19791.
