SUMMARY Zygmunt Myciekki - Andrzej Panufnik. Correspondence. vol. 3 Supplement edition, introduction and commentary Beata Boleslawska-Lewandowska The present Supplement follows the two volumes of correspondence between Zygmunt Mycielski and Andrzej Panufnik published in 2016 and 2018, and provides additional material found after the publication. The material comes primarily from Zygmunt Mycielski’s collection discovered in his flat in ul. Chmielna, Warsaw, in 2019 and transferred first to the Zygmunt Mycielski Society in Wiśniowa and then to Zygmunt Mycielski Archive at the National Library in Warsaw. The collection comprises 31 letters from Andrzej Panufnik previously believed to have been lost. They cover the period from 1 November 1951 to 16 June 1987. The last letter thus extends the period of correspondence between the two artists, as the correspondence published in the second volume ends on 20 May 1987. Some additional material has also been found in the Andrzej Panufnik Archive in Twickenham. It consists of Zygmunt Mycielski’s first two books (Ucieczki z pięciolinii, Warsaw 1957; Notatki o muzyce i muzykach, Kraków 1961). The dedications included in them have been added to the Supplement as a kind of letters (like the dedication in the Postludes, Kraków 1977, published in volume 2, pp. 116-117). In addition, a letter, surviving in the Panufnik Archive and written by Stanisław Kołodziejczyk, Mycielski’s friend and flatmate, to Andrzej Panufnik two weeks after Mycielski’s death, as well as a French-language obituary of the artist constitute a moving epilogue to this
correspondence. There are also annexes featuring material not strictly relating to letters, but completing the picture of the close friendship between the two artists. Annex 1 contains short dedications written bv Andrzej Panufnik on the scores he gave to his friend and preserved in Mycielski’s book collec tion ֊ which is currently to be found in the outbuilding of the Mvcielskis’ old manor in Wiśniowa, as part of the permanent exhibition devoted to the composer. Annex 2 features Panufnik’s hand written list of his engagements as composer and conductor over a period of 20 years as an emigré - a list clearly compiled in collaboration with Mycielski, as it contains his notes and is preserved in his collection. Dated May 1974, the list has never been published elsewhere, as far as I know. The Supplement to Zygmunt Mycielski and Andrzej Panufnik’s correspondence complements the story of friendship between the two composers as recorded in their letters, (t complements the story of the life and friendship of artists separated by the Iron Curtain, who nevertheless not only maintained close contact, but also always supported each other. As a whole, the correspondence provides a priceless testimony to the lives of the two composers - representatives of the world of culture in the second half of the twentieth century. In addition, a letter, surviving in the Panufnik Archive and written by Stanisław Kołodziejczyk, Mycielski’s friend and flatmate, to Andrzej Panufnik two weeks after Mycielski’s death, as well as a French-language obituary of the artist constitute a moving epilogue to this
correspondence. There are also annexes featuring material not strictly relating to letters, but completing the picture of the close friendship between the two artists. Annex 1 contains short dedications written bv Andrzej Panufnik on the scores he gave to his friend and preserved in Mycielski’s book collec tion ֊ which is currently to be found in the outbuilding of the Mvcielskis’ old manor in Wiśniowa, as part of the permanent exhibition devoted to the composer. Annex 2 features Panufnik’s hand written list of his engagements as composer and conductor over a period of 20 years as an emigré - a list clearly compiled in collaboration with Mycielski, as it contains his notes and is preserved in his collection. Dated May 1974, the list has never been published elsewhere, as far as I know. The Supplement to Zygmunt Mycielski and Andrzej Panufnik’s correspondence complements the story of friendship between the two composers as recorded in their letters, (t complements the story of the life and friendship of artists separated by the Iron Curtain, who nevertheless not only maintained close contact, but also always supported each other. As a whole, the correspondence provides a priceless testimony to the lives of the two composers - representatives of the world of culture in the second half of the twentieth century.
