Zusammenfassung: | Petrarch was offered the laurel crown of poetry by the Senate of Rome in the year 1340. His high status and popularity allowed him considerable influence in Trecento Italy. Petrarch's revival of ancient Roman culture and scholarship became the cornerstones of the humanist movement which spurred the Italian Renaissance. A debate exists concerning when Petrarch diverged from medieval tradition. This study will address this question and prove that the core ideas of humanism were present in Petrarch's writings prior to the Great Plague of 1348. This study establishes the core characteristics of the humanist movement, examines examples of Petrarch's early writings written prior to 1348 that go against medieval traditions and reflect humanist ideals, examines Petrarch's later life to provide further evidence that the shift in Petrarch's writing occurred in his early writings, and lastly, discusses the evidence of the advent of humanism in the early writings of Petrarch. It establishes that Petrarch diverged from medieval tradition prior to 1348. |
