309 The book Kristalni plov (Crystal float) presents the opera and concert artistic activities of Bran ka Beretovac, a premier singer of the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb, who for 35 years was the holder of all important lyrical roles in the opera repertoire of the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb. The book was prepared by Dr. sc. Hrvojka Mihanović-Salopek, an associ ate of Ms. Beretovac, who for many years ac companied the artist with organ at numerous sacral concerts, and on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of her first premiere performance in the Zagreb Opera. Branka Beretovac (maid en Gregorič) was born in 1944 in Zagreb. She graduated as a Fellow of the Croatian National Theater in solo singing at the Academy of Mu sic in Zagreb in the class of prof. Zlatko Šira, and during her education she attended Som merakademie in Salzburg. As a student, she made her debut in 1964 in the Croatian Nation al Theater in Zagreb as Jelena in the opera Ni kola Šubic' Zrinjski. During 1967/1968 season she became a permanent soloist at the Opera Stadt Theater in Bonn. Upon returning from Bonn in 1969, she be came a permanent opera soloist and holder of major lyric rolls at the HNK headquarters in Zagreb, with excellent reviews and notable singing and acting interpretations of opera characters which she performed until her re tirement in 2002. She was especially celebrated as Pamina in the Magic Flute, Micaela in Car men, Euridica in Orpheus and Euridica, Mimi in La Boheme, Margarete in Faust, Desdemona in Otello, Marzelina in Fidelio, Adina in Elixir of Love,
Marzhenka in Bartered Bride, Đula in Ero the Joker, Jelena in Nikola Šubic Zrinjski, etc. She has successfully performed at numer ous concerts and opera stages in her home country: »Dubrovnik Summer Games«, »Split Summer«, »Opera Summer Festival in Opati ja«, »Varaždin Baroque Evenings«, Pula Arena and abroad: Bonn, Geneve, Monte Carlo, Paris, Madrid, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Berlin, Salzburg, Brno, Vienna, Luxembourg, Frankfurt A/M, Solingen, Ulm, Budapest, Freiburg, Belgrade. In Vienna, she toured with the Nelson Mass at the Musikverein Hall, where she recorded a record that was later released on compact disc. She also performed as a soloist in Tales of Hoff mann at the Vienna Volksopera, with excellent reviews. She has constantly collaborated with the Rijeka, Split and Osijek operas, and as a fre quent guest of concert events, she has per formed with orchestras: the RTZ Symphony Orchestra (today HRTV), the Croatian Music Institute Social Orchestra, and had a particular ly fruitful collaboration with the Zagreb Phil harmonic Orchestra. She has also performed a number of sacred music concerts as part of the Croatian Sacred Trio (Branka Beretovac, soprano; Branko Mihanović, oboe and Hrvojka Mihanović-Salopek, organ). Most of her repertoire has been record ed for the needs of domestic and foreign radio stations, and her artistic interpretations have been recorded on several CD releases and on HRTV (such as the TV adaptation of Mozart's »The Magic Hute«, the TV recording »The Equinox« by Ivo Brkanović et al.). For her artis tic musical activity, Branka Beretovac has
been honored with distinguished accolades: the mu sical awards »Milka Trnina«, »Josip Stoker Slavenski«, »Vatroslav Lisinski«, »Seven Secre taries of SKOJ«, and the »State Order of Danica Hrvatska with the image of Marko Mamiid«. One can especially point out the artist's in spired and frequent cooperation at home and abroad with the internationally renowned Cro atian conductor maestro Lovro von Matačić. As a prominent Croatian artist, Branka Beretovac was already included as a young soloist in the

In the first chap ter, The Crystal Float, Hrvojka Mihanovič Salo pek chronologically describes Branka Bereto vac's musical artistic activity through the pres entation of her opera rolls at home and abroad. She also provided an insight into the theater ensemble, conductors and directors during the beginning of Branka Beretovac's career, as well as during her solo career, and the high level of her operatic creations was examined by a com parative method and in the cross section of re cent musicological critical reception. This chap ter shows, in fact, that Branka Beretovac had the status of the leading Croatian lyric soprano, which she maintained throughout her almost four decades of career, thanks to her great dis cipline and wise selection of roles that suited her lyrical talent. The second chapter contains biographical information on Branka Beretovac, as well as the opera repertoire and oratorio concert reper toire she has realized throughout her prolific career. The third chapter gives the most important overview of her published recordings on flop pies, LPs, CDs, DVDs and TV recordings. The fourth chapter, entitled Memoirs and Interviews, contains Hrvoje Mihanović-
Salopek's interview with Branka Beretovac, in which the artist recounts her own performan ces and concerts, important opera artists with whom she collaborated, communicates her singing experiences and provides some peda gogical instruction to young generations sing ers. The fifth chapter includes a selection of crit ical reviews that highly value the most impor tant opera roles of Branka Beretovac, written by leading critics and musicologists. For exam ple, Jagoda Martinčevićc characterized Branka in the performance in Faust, »Margaret of dreams«, Davor Schopf, »unrepeatable and un attainable Jelena« in Zrinjski, and Nenad Turk álj, »the ideal interpreter of roles«, etc. In the sixth chapter there is a selection from the opera photo documentation of Branka Beretovac, and in the seventh chapter there are selections from the documentation and photo documentation of the Croatian Sacred Trio in which Branka Beretovac was a soloist. A long term director of the Croatian Na tional Theater opera, Branko Mihanovič wrote on the artist's singing: »She sang effortlessly and her voice was crystal clear in all positions, making it sound almost childlike because of its purity. She intu itively knew how to handle her precious gift, channel it properly, and make it shine perma nently. But what made Branka unique was a sense of depth and understanding, a gentle vulnerability and a rare empathy that gave to all her characteristics in the interpretation of her roles, an extra dimension. Internal heat ra diated from each of her phrases. The timbre of the voice — soft, gentle, sweet,

For exam ple, Jagoda Martinčevićc characterized Branka in the performance in Faust, »Margaret of dreams«, Davor Schopf, »unrepeatable and un attainable Jelena« in Zrinjski, and Nenad Turk álj, »the ideal interpreter of roles«, etc. In the sixth chapter there is a selection from the opera photo documentation of Branka Beretovac, and in the seventh chapter there are selections from the documentation and photo documentation of the Croatian Sacred Trio in which Branka Beretovac was a soloist. A long term director of the Croatian Na tional Theater opera, Branko Mihanovič wrote on the artist's singing: »She sang effortlessly and her voice was crystal clear in all positions, making it sound almost childlike because of its purity. She intu itively knew how to handle her precious gift, channel it properly, and make it shine perma nently. But what made Branka unique was a sense of depth and understanding, a gentle vulnerability and a rare empathy that gave to all her characteristics in the interpretation of her roles, an extra dimension.
