Zusammenfassung: | "Around 1900 cities in Southern and Eastern Europe were persistently labelled "backward" and "delayed." Allegedly they had no alternative but to follow the role model of the metropolises, of London, Paris or Vienna. This edited volume fundamentally questions this assumption. It shows that cities as diverse as Barcelona, Berdyansk, Budapest, Lviv, Milan, Moscow, Prague, Warsaw and Zagreb pursued their own agendas of modernization. In order to solve their pressing problems with respect to urban planning and public health, they searched for best practices abroad. The solutions they gleaned from other cities were eclectic to fit the specific needs of a given urban space and were thus often innovative. This applied urban knowledge was generated through interurban networks and multi-directional exchanges. Yet in the period around 1900, this transnational municipalism often clashed with the forging of urban and national identities, highlighting the tensions between the universal and the local. This interurban perspective helps to overcome nationalist perspectives in historiography as well as outdated notions of "center and periphery." This volume will appeal to scholars from a large number of disciplines, including urban historians, historians of Eastern and Southern Europe, historians of science and medicine and scholars interested in transnational connections"-- |

spelling | Interurban knowledge exchange in Southern and Eastern Europe, 1870-1950 edited by Eszter Gantner, Heidi Hein-Kircher and Oliver Hochadel New York, NY Routledge 2021 © 2021 1 Online Ressource (xii, 317 Seiten) illustrations, maps txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Routledge advances in urban history 9 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on December 02, 2020) "Around 1900 cities in Southern and Eastern Europe were persistently labelled "backward" and "delayed." Allegedly they had no alternative but to follow the role model of the metropolises, of London, Paris or Vienna. This interurban perspective helps to overcome nationalist perspectives in historiography as well as outdated notions of "center and periphery." This volume will appeal to scholars from a large number of disciplines, including urban historians, historians of Eastern and Southern Europe, historians of science and medicine and scholars interested in transnational connections"-- Geschichte 1870-1950 gnd rswk-swf Cities and towns / Effect of technological innovations on / Europe, Southern Cities and towns / Effect of technological innovations on / Europe, Eastern City planning / Europe, Southern / History City planning / Europe, Eastern / History Cities and towns / Growth Civilization, Modern Kulturaustausch (DE-588)4165964-8 gnd rswk-swf Stadtplanung (DE-588)4056754-0 gnd rswk-swf Kulturkontakt (DE-588)4033569-0 gnd rswk-swf Wissenschaftstransfer (DE-588)4207539-7 gnd rswk-swf Stadtentwicklung (DE-588)4056730-8 gnd rswk-swf Stadt (DE-588)4056723-0 gnd rswk-swf Südosteuropa (DE-588)4058449-5 gnd rswk-swf Osteuropa (DE-588)4075739-0 gnd rswk-swf Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 gnd rswk-swf Südeuropa (DE-588)4078023-5 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 g Osteuropa (DE-588)4075739-0 g Südosteuropa (DE-588)4058449-5 g Stadt (DE-588)4056723-0 s Stadtentwicklung (DE-588)4056730-8 s Stadtplanung (DE-588)4056754-0 s Kulturaustausch (DE-588)4165964-8 s Wissenschaftstransfer (DE-588)4207539-7 s Kulturkontakt (DE-588)4033569-0 s Geschichte 1870-1950 z DE-604 Südeuropa (DE-588)4078023-5 g Gantner, Eszter B. edt Hein-Kircher, Heidi 1969- edt Hochadel, Oliver 1968- edt Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 9780367333294 https://doi.org/10.4324/9780429319235 Verlag URL des Erstveroeffentlichers Volltext |
