Zusammenfassung: | This book analyzes the ways in which literary works and cultural discourses employ the construct of the Jew's body in relation to the material world in order either to establish and reinforce, or to subvert and challenge, dominant cultural norms and stereotypes. It examines the use of physical characteristics, embodied practices, tacit knowledge and senses to define the body taxonomically as normative, different, abject or mimetically desired. Starting from the works of Gogol and Dostoevsky through to contemporary Russian-Jewish women's writing, the book argues that materiality also embodies fictional constructions that should be approached as a culture-specific material-semiotic interface |

spelling | Mondry, Henrietta Verfasser (DE-588)112282636 aut Embodied differences the Jew's body and materiality in Russian literature and culture Henrietta Mondry Boston Academic Studies Press 2020 1 Online-Ressource (xxii, 234 Seiten) Illustrationen txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier This book analyzes the ways in which literary works and cultural discourses employ the construct of the Jew's body in relation to the material world in order either to establish and reinforce, or to subvert and challenge, dominant cultural norms and stereotypes. It examines the use of physical characteristics, embodied practices, tacit knowledge and senses to define the body taxonomically as normative, different, abject or mimetically desired. Starting from the works of Gogol and Dostoevsky through to contemporary Russian-Jewish women's writing, the book argues that materiality also embodies fictional constructions that should be approached as a culture-specific material-semiotic interface Geschichte gnd rswk-swf LITERARY CRITICISM / Jewish bisacsh Body image in literature Human body in literature Jews in literature Jews in popular culture Jews Russia Social conditions Russian literature History and criticism Körper Motiv (DE-588)4164424-4 gnd rswk-swf Juden Motiv (DE-588)4123469-8 gnd rswk-swf Russisch (DE-588)4051038-4 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Russisch (DE-588)4051038-4 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Juden Motiv (DE-588)4123469-8 s Körper Motiv (DE-588)4164424-4 s Geschichte z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-64469-485-5 https://doi.org/10.1515/9781644694862 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
