SUMMARY The book «Old out of school. Out-of-School Education Institute in Petrograd, 1918֊ 1924» by Olga Koch is dedicated to the history of the creation of the country’s first institute for training personnel in the field of culture - the St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture. The university was founded in 1918 in Petrograd and is known in the early years of its activity (1918-1924) as the «Out-of-School Education Institute». On the basis of archival documents, the author described the stages of creating a new university from concept to the beginning of the first student recruitment, showed the for mation of the teaching staff that provided training for specialists in new professions for the humanities (teachers for schools, adults and teenagers; museum workers; librarians; managers for people’s houses, clubs). The author reconstructed the list of teachers of the university and on its basis compiled a biobibliographic guide (180 names). For the first time, the names of Petersburg teachers, scientists, officials, cultural figures who supported the creation of a new university were fully established. Among them there are the founder of Russian phenol ogy, forester, professor D. N. Kaigorodov; zoologist and hydrobiologist N. M. Knipovich; physicist A. F. Ioffe; Doctor of Medicine, one of the founders of the St. Petersburg and Rus sian School of pediatricians S. A. Ostrogorsky; anthropologist and ethnographer, professor V. V. Peredolsky; philologist, source specialist, academic secretary of the Russian Language and Literature Department of the Academy of Sciences P. K.
Simoni; physiologist, professor F. E. Tur and others. The reconstruction of biographies was one of the main tasks and its first stage of research. The second stage was the analysis using statistical methods (grouping method). The author found that the involvement of cadres of teachers was based on personal acquaintances of the workers of the People’s Commissariat of Education, both in the party and in activities in public educational organizations and, above all, in the Commissioner of the Out-of-School Education Department L. R. Menzhinskaya and the rector of the institute, the revolutionary underground worker V. A. Zelenko. However, the attempt to form a homo geneous party pedagogical team (supporters of the Bolshevik Party) failed because of a lack of personnel with a higher education. The party composition of the teachers reflected the message of the spectrum of political views characteristic of the intelligentsia of revolutionary Petrograd. The main number of teachers of the new university had experience of teaching in prestigious secondary and higher educational institutions of the city or experience in educa tional public organizations. Among the teachers dominated graduates of St. Petersburg Uni versity. Women teachers made up no more than a quarter of the teachers, received education, as a rule, at the Higher Women’s (Bestuzhev) courses in St. Petersburg and worked at the preparatory department. The team of the new university was highly professional, able to solve the task set for it ֊ to create the concept and programs of the new university, based on the
experience of pre-revolutionary activities. The book is of interest to all professionals studying the history of higher education, local historians, students of humanitarian universities.
