Romantic criticism, of which Shakespeare is the central figure, invented many of the modes of modern criticism. It is also distinct from many contemporary academic norms. Engaged with the social and intellectual currents oí an age ot revolutionary change, it Is experimental, writerlv, and individually expressive. Above all it is creative in response to the difficulties of understanding aesthetic experience in new wavs, and setting that experience in new cultural and political contexts. This book presents the main currents ot these exciting but relatively little known engagements with Shakespeare, and through Shakespeare with the theory and practice of criticism, in England, Germany, and France, írom the 1760s in Germany to the 1860s in France. It also discusses Shakespeare in the theatre of the period—realist stagings prefiguring film; adaptations fitting Shakespeare to contemporary tastes; and bare-stage experiments foreshadowing modes of contemporary theatre. A chapter on scholarship shows Shakespeare as also central to modern editing and historical criticism. The writing discussed is bv men and women whose focus is not primarily critical but creative—poetry, fiction, drama, cultural critique, philosophy, politics, aesthetics, and new original work. It is writing directed to new modes ot creating as well as new modes oí understanding, writing which contemporary criticism, recognising the limita tions of professionalism, is beginning to rediscover and develop. Fundamentally Romantic period Shakespeare criticism models characteristics underlying all method: emotional and
imaginative openness to experience searched with intellectual inventiveness oí expression.
