BOSANSKI LABIRINT SUMMARY Bosanski labirint: kultura, rod і liderstvo (Bosnian Labyrinth: Culture, Gender and Leadership) appeared as the result of re search conducted with Bosnian-Herzegovinian leaders in poli tics and business from 2015 to 2018. The research focused on analyzing the influence of culture and gender on leadership and leadership styles, as well as the effect of organizational culture on leadership effectiveness and leadership style. Three focus groups with female leaders from three cities and in-depth interviews with 71 male leaders (36 women and 35 men) were data sources for the research; all participants are highly positioned politicians and managers with more than five years of leadership experience. The data was partially gathered via an MLQ completed by the associ ates and an ALQ (completed by 31 leaders). According to the results, trait approach and deterministic relation ships dominate cultural perceptions because most interviewees believe that genetic predispositions and inborn personal traits are crucial for leadership development, although they also emphasize the importance of circumstances. The study participants primari ly value moral qualities in leaders, followed by skills and aptness; however, standardization of gender roles and the influence of the idea of the stereotypical ideal male leader in contrast with the sensitive female leader also play an important role. Strong female leaders and sensitive male leaders diverge from socially expect ed gender roles. Although there are differences between women and men in risk-taking, emotional
influence in decision-making, focus on tasks and/or human relations - these differences are not pronounced: both men and women are risk-takers and they 191
BOSANSKI LABIRINT appreciate the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership. Women, in particular, emphasize emotional self-control in order to align their gender role with their leadership role, because the excessive emotional expression is considered a weakness. The ALQ result analysis of authentic leadership indicates that gen der differences in authentic leadership are insignificant. Despite the encouraging attitudes of the young leaders who participated, the labyrinth of leadership continues to seriously challenge women with stereotypes, autostereotypes, and social discouragement, in addition to the moral double standards employed when assessing their readiness for leadership. When these challenges are consid ered, along with the issue of institutionalized horizontal segrega tion in the job market and masculine culture in organizations that promote assertive leadership, it is clear that women have to invest significantly more effort than men in overcoming all the obstacles arising within the leadership labyrinth in this cultural climate. 192
