Restoration of Capitalism = Repatriarchalization of Society Re-imposition of capitalism has resulted in a massive scaling back of basic socio-economic rights, in the gradual or overnight dismantling of extensive social welfare systems and in the over all destruction of people’s well-being. This in turn has led to the creation of differentially segmented and hierarchically organized categories of the exploited, a phenomenon not known in social ism. The book demonstrates that the re-instalment of capitalist social relations affects women differently from men as it rests on the processes of re-patriarchalization. Capitalism is directly dependent on patriarchal subordination and gendered exploita tion of women. Its system of capital accumulation, among oth er things, rests on the redefinition of social reproductive work as non-work and as a matter of private and individual concern rather than social and collective responsibility. This kind of re definition enables capital owners to shirk financial responsibili ty and therefore increase their accumulation of capital through further appropriation of surplus labour by avoiding the financial inputs that are necessary for the basic reproduction and regu lar upkeep of their current and future labour force. According ly, capitalism has consistently re-conceptualized the burden of care for children - and by extension for the elderly, the sick and the disabled - as something associated solely and entirely with individuals, and more precisely, with women. Within capitalist patriarchal framework women are posited as a specially
desig nated group of people, who should do this kind of work out of
RESTAURACIJA KAPITALIZMA love and for free in the imaginary private sphere of their homes, supposedly as a natural extension of their assigned femininity. The restoration of exploitative capitalist social relations has resulted in women’s redomestication and housewifization. In their newly assigned and institutionally reinforced role of un paid, round-o-clock reproductive workers they are increasingly constituted as merely secondary earners to be confined mostly to the informal or semi-informal sector of the economy. This is reflected in the promotion of part-time jobs and home-based work for mothers. The re-instalment of capitalist social re lations thus abdicates on the socialist idea of gender equality, which among other rests on the notion that the costs of social reproduction should be socialized. In capitalism they are instead privatized. This is directly related to the re-enactment and nat uralization of conservative gender constructs, to the instalment of prolonged parental leaves for women to keep them out of labour markets and/or a significant decrease in parental leave compensations, which in the end leaves women economically vulnerable and dependant on other family members, primarily their partners. Protracted periods of unpaid or low-paid paren tal leave and complete lack of/only limited provision of pub licly funded childcare alongside increased commercialization of care for the rich have a double negative impact on women’s socio-economic and political status.
